Hockey starved Canadians can get ready to feast this holiday season, as the 2005 IIHF World Junior Championships get underway on Christmas Day in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Last week, head coach Brent Sutter and head scout Blair Mackasey trimmed the Canadian roster to 23 players. Nine players were released last Thursday. The 23 players include two goaltenders, eight defensemen and 13 forwards. One defenseman remains to be cut, due to an injury to defenseman Brent Seabrook, who was injured a week ago during an inter-squad game. Of the 23 remaining players, 12 are returning from last year's silver medal winning team at the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championships in Finland. The average age of Canada's 2005 World Junior Championship Team is 19 years, 5 months and 28 days, the oldest since the inception of the program. The average height on this year's team is 6'1, with an average weight of 205 lbs. A total of 16 of the 23 players have previous international experience with Canada's National Under-18 Program and 17 players have also played as members of one of Canada's five regional Under-17 teams, a part of Hockey Canada's Program of Excellence. Canada's first game at the 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship will be December 25 versus Slovakia at 3:30 p.m. and willbe broadcast live on TSN.
