Canada leads A pool at IIHF world juniors

Team Canada pulled off a win against the US earlier in the week to place first in the Group A of the IIHF World Junior Championships. Canada’s 3-2 win over the Americans on New Year’s Eve left them with 10 points and a move into the top spot.

The Red and White pushed above the US team by one point as their only loss came in a shootout against the Czech Republic.
Canada and US remained close in the standings with 10 and nine points in Group A, leaving the other teams behind as the Czech finished the Preliminary Round with five points.
Slovakia and Germany each finished the round-robin action with three points.
In Group B, Sweden took top spot with 12 points – also claiming first in the round-robin – while Finland took second with seven points.
Russia came in third place with six points while Switzerland sat fourth with five points.
Norway came up empty-handed with four losses and zero points in the tournament.
Both Norway and Germany were eliminated after the round-robin action.
Canada moved on to compete against Switzerland in the Quarter Finals while Sweden and Slovakia competed.
Canada and the Swiss were in the middle of game-time as The Reminder went to press, yesterday morning.
As press time came, Canada was leading Switzerland 1-0 after the first period of play.
The winner of yesterday’s game will move to take on the winner of the Finland-Czech game for the semifinal game.
Team USA and Russia also matched up as the winner would advance to play the winner of the Sweden-Slovakia game.
