A group of broomball buffs from Flin Flon and Swan River joined forces to form a team to participate in the Manitoba Broomball Provincials, March 5-7 in Shoal Lake. For many of the players, it was their first time ever playing the sport, as six of the 11 members attending the tournament had never played in an organized game before. Keeping this in mind, the team did extremely well, competing against Kellwood and Shoal Lake, who have well established clubs. Flin Flon lost their first game on Friday night 4-1 to Shoal lake to open the tournament, and rebounded with a 2-1 win over Kellwood on Saturday morning. In game three, Flin Flon held Shoal Lake to a 2-2 draw after regulation thanks to some sensational goaltending by Carl Hill. Unfortunately, in broomball overtime, goaltenders are not a factor, as teams play four-on-four with no netminders. The overtime period is five minutes long, and is not sudden death. Shoal Lake scored twice to win the game. In their third game of the day, Flin Flon ran out of gas, losing a tough battle to Kellwood by a score of 3-2. Shoal Lake received the bye into the finals on Sunday, leaving Flin Flon and Kellwood to meet again in the semifinals, where the winner would advance to the finals, and the loser would leave with the bronze medals. Flin Flon couldn't get any goals past the Kellwood netminder, and lost 4-0 to earn the bronze medal.
