The Humboldt Broncos may still be the number one ranked team in Canada, and the top team in the SJHL, but the Melfort Mustangs proved that they are beatable and that they can be challenged. The two teams played a big home and home series this past weekend with each team winning in the other teams rink. On Friday, Brody Haygarth scored twice in a 3-2 Melfort victory, but Humboldt responded the next night at the Northern Lights Palace as Nick Keller and Josh Roach each had a goal and two assists in a 5-2 win. The results leave the Broncos five points ahead of Melfort in the Bauer Conference. While the Broncos sit atop the Bauer Conference, the Yorkton Terriers still sit on the top rung of the Sherwood Conference ladder. The Terriers are on a nine game road trip, but so far, so good as they are 4-1. Two of those wins coming in La Ronge as Devin Peters stopped 80 of 83 shots in a rematch of last year's league final. Larry Wintoneak's Kindersley Klippers squad is in the middle of the pack in the Bauer Conference after losing three of its last four, but Wintoneak has left the club handing the reins over to assistant Rocky Zinger for the next few weeks. Wintoneak has left the club to start preparations for the World Junior "A" challenge in Penticton as he will guide the Canada West team. Wintoneak is as excited as ever to try and keep Canada West perfect in this event when it comes to medalling. "There's pressure on you, but its how you handle that pressure. I don't find it to be pressure, but a challenge," Wintoneak told sjhl.ca this past week. "I'll be nervous as I'm sure our players will be. I'll be fired up and I know our players will be too." Three of the players on the Canada West team will be players that Wintoneak is familiar with. They are Weyburn's Drew George, Yorkton's Clarke Breitkreuz and Sean Flanagan of the Klippers. Wintoneak says each player is more than deserving of representing the SJHL in Penticton. "We are taking players from B.C right to Thunder Bay so there is a wide swath of area for us to choose players from. In the end, I think we have the team that we wanted." Wintoneak said. "Clarke Breitkreuz will bring some much-needed experience which will be needed. He had a role last year and he played it perfectly. He will bring us some offensive punch along with being a complete player. "Drew made this team at the camp by scoring five goals in two inter-squad games. He has a knack for the net and we think he'll make a real splash. As for Sean, I know what he brings since he's been with me for two years. The kid can play and he'll show that at this event." The Weyburn Red Wings may be getting their act together. The Wings have struggled in goal and have had four different goalies guard the goal this season. Mitch Kilgore may have won the job outright this week as he posted back to back shutouts over Kindersley and Nipawin. The RBC players of the month for September/October were released on Sunday. The player of the month is SJHL leading scorer Justin Buzzeo. The Broncos forward has 34 points and has at least one point in his last 15 games. The top defenceman is Notre Dame's James Howden. Charles Corsi of the Melfort Mustangs is the league's top goaltender while the month's top rookie is Coltyn Sanderson. The Weyburn Red Wing first year player had 15 points in 20 games.
