The Humboldt Broncos got off to a good start in the ANAVET Cup series as they rallied for four unanswered goals in the third period as they defeated the Portage Terriers 5-3 in game one of the best of seven.Ê The Broncos fell behind early as the Terriers got first period goals from Eric Delong and a shorthanded one from Ryan Audino.Ê Dane Lindskog got one back for the Broncos before the period was over.Ê The two sides were blanked in the second and after a bad beginning to the third, the Broncos took the game over. Portage went ahead 3-1 when Bronco netminder Taylor Nelson was caught out of position on DelongÕs wraparound attempt. Ê AJ Spiller picked it up from there and threw the puck into an open net. Humboldt, like they have done a few times in the playoffs, didnÕt even allow the Terriers to settle in to their newfound two goal lead.Ê Just 30 seconds after the Spiller goal, Scott Schroeder beat Gavin McHale with a back hander to close the gap to one. Just over a minute later, at 3:34, Ed Gale got a big one to tie it at three as the Broncos created a flurry of offense from a face off win in the offensive zone. HumboldtÕs first lead game when Laurent BenjaminÕs backhander eluded McHale at 8:11. Jordan Schindel made it 5-3 as he teamed up with Benjamin to put the game out of reach with 3:09 to play.Ê Both Schindel and Benjamin had three point games. The Broncos outshot Portage 42-15 overall and 31-9 over the final two periods.Ê Yet, Assistant Coach Murray Brookbank didnÕt sound completely satisfied.Ê ÒThere are some things we can do better,Ó he says.Ê ÒWe had our powerplay working well against Kindersley, but tonight we tried to be too sweet and that is something weÕll address after watching some video later tonight (Friday). ÒThey (Portage) are a good hockey club and you donÕt win league championships without being good.Ê TheyÕll probably have a little more tomorrow.Ê ÒDonÕt forget they had a 10 day layoff and I think that can, perhaps, work against you. ÊWe just played on Tuesday night and were still high from the Kindersley series.Ê That was a positive for us.Ó
