The Humboldt Broncos completed a four game series sweep in what may have been the most lopsided ANAVET Cup of this decade as the Broncos blanked the Terriers 5-0 to register their second straight shutout Wednesday. Matthew Rintoul, Steven Schroeder, and Russell Nielsen all had a goal and two assists in the series clincher.Ê Scott Schroeder and Matthew Kirzinger also scored. Since 2000, the only other ANAVET series that may compare would be the 1999-2000 series when the Battlefords North Stars defeated the OCN Blizzard in five games.Ê The SJHL leads the overall series with the MJHL in the ANAVET 28-10 and 6-3 in this decade. The Broncos dominated this series from the get-go.Ê They outshot the Terriers 50-15 in game four after outshooting them 42-15, 54-22, and 43-30 in games one, two, and three respectively. They also inflicted a lot of damage on the powerplay.Ê They scored four times with the man advantage in game four, to finish the series nine for 35 (25.7%), while Portage slumped to one for 22 (4.5%). Defensemen Nielsen and Rintoul led the team in scoring as Nielsen had three goals and four assists while Rintoul chipped in a goal and six helpers.Ê Nielsen, Kirzinger, and Scott Schroeder all had three goals to lead the team in that category.Ê Goaltender Taylor Nelson rebounded after a slow start to the series to finish with a 1.75 GAA and a .915 SPCT. Brayden Klimosko, who had a goal and three assists, was named the ANAVET Cup Most Valuable Player.Ê Game 3 Game 3 between the Terriers and the Broncos was similar to the rest as Hubmoldt came out and blanked the MJHL team 3-0. Goaltender Taylor Nelson rebounded after allowing seven goals in the first two games of the series to shut down the Terriers and make 30 saves, which included killing off all nine Portage powerplays. Steven Schroeder broke a scoreless tie with a shorthanded goal at 11:48 of the second period.Ê It was a harmless looking play when Schroeder took everybody by surprise and whistled a shot in the top corner. Tanner Vandesype scored on a break out play at 18:41 of the second to put the Broncos up by two going into the final stanza. Matthew KirzingerÕs powerplay goal at 8:11 of the third put a cap on the scoring. Assistant Coach Murray Brookbank was pleased with the effort.Ê ÒIt was just a game where we worked hard from the beginning to the end.Ê We took a couple of undisciplined penalties that we need to clean up for tomorrow night; but Taylor Nelson bounced back with a real strong game and this was another team effort.Ó Brookbank also thought the specialty teams were a difference maker.Ê ÒOur penalty kill was good tonight.Ê Our powerplay created chances and we had good puck movement.Ê When you do that you will be rewarded.ÓÊ
