Scott Schroeder scored a shorthanded goal with just one second remaining in the third period to lift the Humboldt Broncos past the Victoria Grizzlies 2-1 in the opening game of the RBC Cup in Victoria on Saturday night. Mathieu Larochelle stopped 33 shots for the win and gave his team a chance even though Victoria held the 1-0 lead after 40 minutes. To that point, the game's only goal came while Victoria enjoyed a 5-on-3 powerplay with Scott Schroeder and Kyle Cowan both in the box. Spencer Braaten tied it early in the third and the score stayed 1-1 until Schroeder's unlikely heroics with Nick Kalnicki serving a hooking penalty at the time. The Broncos played Vernon Monday night. The game was officiated by Nathan Wieler, of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
