The Humboldt Broncos peppered Gavin McHale for the second straight night and emerged with a 6-4 win over the Portage Terriers on Saturday to grab a two-games-to-none lead in the best of seven ANAVET Cup series. The scene shifts to Portage for games three, four, and (if necessary) five next week.Ê Game three was played last night. The Broncos, who failed to score with the man advantage in game one, fired four powerplay goals in game two as the defense stepped up on offense with Russell Nielsen leading the way with two goals and one assist.Ê Matthew Rintoul added four helpers. Nielsen scored both of his goals on the powerplay in the second period, the first one tied the game at three at 11:52 and the second one put the Broncos ahead to stay at 14:39. Humboldt appeared to be in control for most of the game, although James Cain scored for Portage just over a minute after Jeremy Dawes had tied the game at two early in the middle frame. An early third period goal from Ed Gale, on the powerplay, gave the Broncos a 5-3 lead.Ê Tanner Irwin closed the margin to one at 5:37 and that was the way it stayed until Scott SchroederÕs insurance tally with two and a half minutes to play. Matthew Kirzinger and Brayden Klimosko also scored for Humboldt. Eric Delong had a goal and an assist to lead the Terriers.Ê The Broncos have outshot Portage in all six periods so far, including a combined 32-7 in the third period.Ê Humboldt has outscored Portage 6-2 in the third.Ê The overall shot total is 96-37. Through two games, the Broncos have four players with four points.Ê Nielsen and Gale are both 2-2-4.Ê Laurent Benjamin is 1-3-4, and Rintoul is 0-4-4.Ê Rintoul and Nielsen both have three powerplay points.Ê In goal, Taylor Nelson has struggled a bit at 3.50 GAA and .811 SPCT.Ê The one lineup change for Humboldt in game two was Tory Allan sat (injury) and Bryce Walker dressed. For the Terriers, Eric Delong leads the team with 2-2-4 totals.Ê Ryan Audino is 1-1-2.Ê The only powerplay goal for Portage went to Dawes.Ê McHale is 5.50 GAA and .885 SPCT, which is a far cry from his MJHL Goaltender of the Year numbers.Ê In game two, Phil Letkeman dressed while Luke MacInnis watched from the seats.
