Broncos lead, Bombers sit in third

Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Heading into a weekend of hockey, the Battlefords North Stars lost their lead in the Bauer Conference standings as the Humboldt Broncos overcame them by one point. Sitting with 61 points, as of Thursday morning, the Broncos were top of the Bauer Conference as well as the SJHL. With 60 points, the North Stars were one point below the RBC host team but still claimed second in the league. The Weyburn Red Wings found comfort in first place of the Sherwood Conference with 55 points _ leaving a 12 point gap between the second place Yorkton Terriers, Melville Millionaires and Estevan bruins who all had 43 points. Third place of the SJHL went to the Flin Flon Bombers as they sat with 49 points, one point above the La Ronge Ice Wolves who claimed fourth place in the Bauer Conference. The three-way tie in the Sherwood Conference left a considerable gap between the Terriers, Millionaires and Bruins over the Notre Dame Hounds who earned 29 points. Overall, the Nipawin Hawks of the Bauer Conference claimed ninth place of the SJHL with 40 points as the Hounds slipped in 10th with 29 points. The Melfort Mustangs brought up the bottom of the barrel with 20 points and sixth place in the Bauer Conference. The Mustangs sat one point below the Kindersley Klippers as they rounded out the Sherwood Conference. Weekend action The Flin Flon Bombers, in third place of the Bauer Conference, took on the Notre Dame Hounds, fifth place of the Sherwood Conference, Saturday night. Hosting a team for the first time since December 10, the Bombers looked to improve their record. As of Thursday the Bombers held a 21-11-2-5 record in 39 games played. Good for 49 points, the Bombers were 20 points above the Hounds who sat with a record of 13-23-0-3 in 39 games played.
