Ed Gale scored a late first period powerplay goal and Taylor Nelson made 31 saves as the Humboldt Broncos defeated the Camrose Kodiaks 1-0 in the gold medal game of the RBC Cup in Cornwall, ON Sunday afternoon. Nelson was the first star as he made a tremendous stop on CJAHL Player Of The Year Joe Colborne with just one second remaining in the third period.Ê The Kodiaks pulled netminder Allen York with just under a minute to go with Camrose on a powerplay.Ê Camrose pressed and the Broncos were unable to clear during that nailbiting final minute.Ê As the clock was ticking down to zero, the Kodiaks were able to get their top player, Colborne, into a great position for a shot.Ê But, it was Nelson who challenged him at the top of the crease and made a glove save with just :01 remaining..Ê Right off the face off, Connolly took a pass and found himself in tight on Nelson but he held his ground while he calmly went down in the butterfly. For Nelson, it was a fitting way to end his junior career--with a shutout.Ê He had seven in the regular season to set an SJHL regular season record.Ê He also had four in the SJHL playoffs, settingÊan all-time league record along the way with over 254 consecutive scoreless minutes.Ê In total, Nelson ended up with 15 shutouts this season. The gameÕs only goal was a result of hard work from Gale, who bullied his way out of the left wing corner and went directly to the net, jamming it in on the shortside of York, who gave an heroic effort playing through a broken finger on his catching hand. Meanwhile, Humboldt wins the RBC for the second time in this decade.Ê They also beat Camrose in the final of 2003.Ê ItÕs the third time an SJHL team has won in the last six years.Ê In addition with the Broncos winning in 2003 and 2008, Weyburn won as the host team in 2005.Ê Flin Flon fell in the championship contest in 2001.Ê Kindersley played in the finals of 2004 and Yorkton lost in the gold medal game of 2006.Ê That run of teams appearing in championship games of the RBC means the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League has been seen on national television during the RBC finals in six of the last eight years.Ê In fact, the only two years they were not represented were seasons in which they failed to win the ANAVET and werenÕt represented at the RBC.Ê (OCN in 2002, Selkirk in 2007).
