Thirty participants went to Abele's Bowling Centre on Sunday for the Bowl-A-Thon to knock down pins and raise money for the Kids Help Phone. "Today is going good," said coordinator Deena Lofgren. Lofgren said the goal was to raise $1,000. Without knowing the final count, they had reached $1,300, despite lower numbers. "It's probably less Ð in kids Ð which is unfortunate with prizes available," Lofgren explained. "We'd like to see more kids out." Helping make the fundraiser a success was Abele's Bowling Alley, which donated bowling time. Volunteers and various businesses also contributed along with the Manitoba 5-pin Bowlers Association. "Everybody comes together and works hard for a month," Lofgren said. "In the first year, we raised $300 and we didn't have an organization. Each year we hope for more." Brenda Abele, from Abele's Bowling Centre, said there wasn't any debate when it came to getting involved. "It's to help kids and to get people involved," she said. "It feels good and we will continue to help. It's nice to see the turnout this year. Next year hopefully we'll have more." The fundraiser helps keep the children's line going. The phone number is listed with the emergency numbers. The Kids Help Phone is a Canadian service designed to assist troubled kids and for parents to seek assistance with their children. The service has been valuable with over one million calls each year, Lofgren said.
