It wasn't a typical game for the Flin Flon Bombers in Battlefords Tuesday as things remained scoreless until the start of a shootout against the North Stars. Matt Weninger stood tall in net for the Bombers as he turned away nearly 40 shots, giving his team a1-0 victory. Head coach and GM Mike Reagan says it was a slow game for both teams. "It was very boring," he said. "There was not a lot of intensity. Both teams just went through the motions, I thought." Starting out, the Bombers were lacking as they didn't have their legs. Reagan said it was apparent they had just gotten off a seven-hour bus ride and had a sluggish start. But when it came to the second period, the coach said the Maroon and White were the better team. Going into the third period, with the score still tied a 0-0, Reagan was pleased. "I thought we were lucky because we didn't play very well in the first period," he said. Four periods later, the teams prepared for their shootout. Weninger was able to knock away all three shots from the North Stars. For the Bombers, Mike Rey had the first attempt on North Stars goalie Graham Hildebrand, but was unable to get past him. Second up for the Bombers was Brody Haygarth, who scored the lone goal of the game. "We were pretty confident going into (the shootout)," Reagan said. The coach said with a confident looking goaltender, he was able to feel more confident. "I knew that Winny was going to be good," he said. Following their game in Battlefords, the Bombers travelled to Humboldt to take on the Broncos Wednesday night. Reagan was hoping an overnight stay in Saskatoon would make a difference in how the team played. It was only an hour from where they would play the following night, much shorter than their usual trip. But their biggest worry was already out of the way. Reagan said going on a road trip, the team is always looking for at least one win Ð and the Bombers had that under their belts. "We've got that and feel good about tonight," he said in a phone interview Wednesday afternoon. The coach was hoping to see a better effort from the Bombers in Wednesday's game. "It's a big game in Humboldt," he said. With the games typically "pretty tough" between these two teams, Reagan hoped to see the Bombers pull through for another two points. Heading into the game against the Broncos, the Bombers sat with 45 points, good for first place in the Bauer Conference. The Broncos sat with 34 points and called fourth place of the same conference home. The North Stars remained in second place of the Bauer Conference after Tuesday night's game with 40 points. Leading the Sherwood Conference, the Weyburn Red Wings still called first place home with 46 points Ð as they lead the SJHL Ð while second place was claimed by the Notre Dame Hounds with 38 points. In the Bauer Conference, the Nipawin Hawks held onto last place with 29 points while the Estevan Bruins were in last place of the Sherwood Conference with 26 points.
