It took 11 rounds to do it, but the Flin Flon Bombers now have their first shootout win of the season.
The Bombers rallied late in the third period to tie the game before beating the Yorkton Terriers 4-3.
Yorkton found the twine early, with Brendan Mark and Cole Keenleyside both scoring in the first period. Brody Madarash scored his first goal of the year in the second period to cut the Terriers' lead to 2-1.
With a goal midway through the third by Austen Flaman, the Terriers had what looked like a secure 3-1 lead, but the Bombers set out to prove that a two goal lead really is the worst lead in hockey. Less than two minutes after Flaman scored, Brandson Hein got his first goal in a Bomber uniform.
Then, with Bomber goalie Colten Lancaster pulled for an extra attacker, Caleb Moretz beat Yorkton goalie Ben Laidlaw, tying the game with only 27 seconds left on the clock.
Overtime solved nothing for the second straight night for Flin Flon, leading to a shootout. Before Friday's game, the Bombers had not won in a shootout this season, dropping all four they had played previously.
Lancaster and Laidlaw were brick walls for their teams, each stopping one shot after another. By the time the teams entered the 11th round of the shootout, neither goalie had given up a goal, with each making 10 straight breakaway stops.
Caleb Moretz got the tap on the shoulder to start the 11th round of the shootout for Flin Flon. He beat Laidlaw, setting up Yorkton's Drew Coughlin in a score-or-go-home scenario. Coughlin couldn't capitalize, sealing the win for Flin Flon.
Lancaster made 25 saves, not including the shootout. Laidlaw had a busy night in the Yorkton crease, making 45 saves.
The Bombers will play their third game in three nights Saturday against ex-Bomber Nick Shumlanski and the Humboldt Broncos.
