In a reversal of roles from last season, the conference-leading Bombers hosted the fourth-place Broncos Tuesday night at the Whitney Forum. The Bombers separated themselves a little further from Humboldt in the Bauer Conference standings, spreading the gap to eight points. The Maroon and White earned a 2-1 win over the defending RBC Cup champions. Putting Matt Weninger in net gave the Bombers confidence, as he was a brick wall for the team, stopping 27 of 28 shots. But Humboldt had their secret weapon in net as well Ð Andrew Bodnarchuk. It was a scoreless first period, a credit to the goalies as both teams fired off shots and had good opportunities to get to the back of the net. Alex Lamontagne was able to get past the Broncos on a power play during the middle of the second period. With help from Dominic Martel and David Dykstra, Lamontagne broke Bodnarchuk's goose egg. Answering back was Cameron Coibson with Humboldt's only goal of the game. Heading into the dressing room, the Bombers and Broncos were tied at 1-1 at the end of the second. The third period came with the game-winning goal at the 42-second mark. Dougie McLeod stepped up and found the back of the net with help from Patrick Howey and Ben Bitz. Earning another two points, the Bombers sat at the top of the standings ladder with 30 points Ð leaving the Broncos at 20. Next on the docket for the Bombers are the Ice Wolves. Traveling to La Ronge this Tuesday, the Bombers hope to continue their success. The Ice Wolves currently sit in third place in the Bauer Conference.
