Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Flin Flon Bombers earned a much-needed 5-2 win over the Melfort Mustangs last Saturday night. After losing a hard-fought 5-4 road game against the Mustangs the night before, Flin Flon brought Melfort back to the Whitney Forum and took their two points with pride. The Bombers took the lead early on with a goal from Corey Tyrell at the 2:32 mark, with help from Andrew Johnston. Tyrell scored the Bombers' second goal, on a power play, with one second on the clock in the first period, making it 2-1 Ð following a quick goal from the Mustangs in the middle of the period. Hitting the ice in the second period, it was all Bombers. Beau Stewart scored the lone goal near the 13-minute mark to make it 3-1. The Mustangs made their way back on the scoreboard in the third period with their first goal, but Flin Flon captain Ryan Fox kept the Bomber ball rolling with the team's fourth goal near the 18-minute mark. Melfort coach Darrell Mann pulled goalie Jesse Ehnisz for an extra attacker, hoping to narrow Flin Flon's lead. But Devon Stillar took advantage of the empty net with a goal from the centre line, coming after a missed attempt just seconds earlier. The Bombers celebrated their 5-2 victory as they huddled around netminder PJ Musico. Penalties were plentiful, though the Bomber fans weren't complaining too much. The Mustangs were in the box 13 times, compared to the Bombers' four penalties. Just shy of 700 fans cheered as the Bombers left the ice, still celebrating their home-ice victory. Home Wins Winning, whether at home or on the road, hasn't come easy for the Bombers this season. After 51 games, they had secured 22 wins with 27 losses and two overtime losses. At the Whitney Forum, the Bombers have formed around centre ice for their victory celebration 14 times for the win this season. With only three home games left in the regular season, the team will want to pick up the pace to get to 17 home wins, of a possible 29. The Bombers headed to Nipawin last night to challenge the Hawks and will face the La Ronge Ice Wolves tonight in a make-up game. The Bombers are at home this weekend as they get set to host the Battlefords North Stars in a double-header weekend.
