It was deemed as their hardest and most important game of the four-game road series. Saturday's game against the Estevan Bruins left the Flin Flon Bombers with their first loss in the series as the home team was able to pick up a 3-1 victory. Coming off of a two-game winning streak, the Bombers were hoping to walk away with a 3-1 record for their road trip. But the loss on Saturday brought their chances down as they still had the Weyburn Red Wings to face on Sunday night. Though the score was closer at the end of Sunday's game, the Bombers lost 5-4 in a shootout. Out of a possible eight points on their road trip, the Bombers earned five Ð which left them above the .500 mark. Getting the third game of the series underway in Estevan, it was a scoreless first period for both teams with only a few penalties to be called. It was the second period when the Bruins came out to play for their home crowd as they earned two goals against Matt Weninger. Mark Cross earned the first point for the team, followed by Brant Harris five minutes later. With the score 2-0 for Estevan, the Bombers were in need of a goal. And it was Devin Mitzner who was able to pull through and earn their first, and only, goal of the game. Just a few minutes later, Estevan scored their third and final goal of the night on a power play. Penalties came from everywhere in the third period as fighting broke out amongst the two teams. First off, for the Bruins, Chad Filteau was given a game misconduct for two minutes for checking from behind at 4:08. Flin Flon's newly added Shane Goodrunning spent five minutes in the bin for fighting, as did Estevan's Calvin Cairns at 5:40. Hitting the 9:35 mark, Doug McLeod was given two minutes for roughing while Bruin Brett McKernon faced the same call. And 12:04 was the last single penalty call as Mathieu Lecours was given two minutes for slashing. From there, both Estevan and Flin Flon spent some time in the sin bin as 19 penalties were handed out between the two teams. For Flin Flon, Jesse Mychan was given two minutes for charging and five minute for fighting and Jeff Lorenz was given five minutes for fighting and a 10 minute game misconduct. Ben Bitz was given five minutes for fighting and a 10 minute game misconduct as well. Scott Brkich ended out the Bomber penalties with the same call as Bitz and Lorenz. Estevan featured the same calls with slashing and instigating calls added to the list. Earning himself a second star in Friday's game was Flin Flon goalie, Weninger as he had 39 shots come his way throughout the game. Saturday's game was friendlier on the penalty calls as the Bombers faced the Weyburn Red Wings. Scoring off the bat in the first period were the Red Wings as they set the score 2-0 and the standard for the Bombers. The Bombers put up eight shots against Tanner Erickson in the first period, a lower number for the Maroon and White, but they were able to bring their number closer to average as they finished with 33 shots on net while Klynt Spencer had 37 come his way. Heading into the second period, the Bombers were down 2-0, but again Mitzner was on the case. With help from Andrew Johnston, who was recently named as a runner up for SJHL Rookie of the Month, and Lecours, Mitzner was able to find the back of the net to get the Bombers in the game. The third period came with a number of power play goals as Weyburn started off the scoring. With the game at 2-1, the Red Wings carried the score a little farther away with a goal from Brennan Wrigley on a power play and then another from Kyle Johnson. Starting at the 11:53 mark the Bombers tied the game to make it 4-4. Earning goals for Flin Flon were Michael Young, with help from Lecours and Patrick Sitko on a power play. The team's third goal came from Lorenz with help from David Dykstra and David Roper Ð also on a power play. And to wrap things up in regulation time, Lecours lit the lantern, on a power play, with help from Mitzner and Johnston. Overtime came and went as neither team was able to get to the back of the net. On came the shootout. Shooting for Flin Flon were Johnston (save), Mitzner (goal), Young (save), Lecours (save), Sitko (goal), Dykstra (save), Lorenz (save), Brkich (save) and Mitch Dougall (save). The Bombers lost to the Red Wings in the shootout 5-4. Next up for the team, the Maroon and White will be hosting the Kindersley Klippers in a double header weekend on Friday and Saturday.
