The Flin Flon Bombers have earned a spot in the most recent national top 20 teams list.
After weeks away from the list and a berth as an honourable mention last week, the Bombers entered the CJHL's Top 20 Rankings proper this week, coming in 18th of all Canadian junior A squads. The Bombers are one of three SJHL franchises to make the most recent rankings - the top team, the Estevan Bruins, sit in ninth place, while the Humboldt Broncos are ranked 13th. The Bombers have defeated both teams so far this season.
The Bombers currently sit atop the Sherwood division and in third place overall in the league with 65 points. The Battlefords North Stars, who the Bombers beat twice last weekend, sit fourth with 60 points, while Melfort sits fifth and second in the Sherwood division with 58 points. The Bombers also have the highest-rated powerplay in the SJHL, scoring 24.2 per cent of the time with an extra skater or two.
The CJHL mistakenly listed the Bombers as an MJHL franchise in the rankings, prompting an online response from the team.
"In the latest CJHL Top 20 Rankings, the Bombers are ranked 18th. We also haven’t been a part of the MJHL in over 30 years," reads a statement put out by the team on social media.
Flin Flon may not repeat this feat next week, as rankings are weighed by each team's recent performance. The Bombers lost 4-2 on home ice to second-last place Nipawin Feb. 15, possibly putting their spot on the list in jeopardy.
