This past week the Flin Flon Bombers went 3-1 while playing four road games in five days.
At the SJHL Christmas break, the Bombers are now 18-13-0-4, good for fourth in the SJHL.
“[We are] very happy with the way the team has played,” assistant coach Gary Childerhose said after the second of the team’s four games. “Good atmosphere in the room. Guys don’t seem to be distracted by Christmas.”
Flin Flon head coach Mike Reagan was away in December helping the Canada West squad win Gold at the World Junior A Challenge.
Canada West defeated Russia 2-1 at the prestigious event, held in Whitby and Cobourg, Ontario.
Childerhose and fellow assistant coach Chris Bortis led the squad in Reagan’s absence.
Childerhose said his squad just found a way to win 2-1 in La Ronge last Wednesday, Dec. 16.
The Bombers scored twice in the first period and that was all the offence they would need. Childerhose praised the play of veteran goalie Zac Robidoux, who made 30 saves.
The next night Flin Flon scored four times in the third period – three times on the power play – to post a 7-3 road victory over Kindersley. Mitch Foyle and Brandon Switzer both scored twice.
Against Battlefords, the SJHL’s top team, the Bombers trailed 2-1 at the end of the first and second periods Saturday, Dec. 18.
In the final period, Joel Kocur scored his team-high 22nd goal of the season to tie things up before Brandon Lesko got his fourth of the year to put Flin Flon on top. Switzer added an empty-netter.
Flin Flon saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Kindersley on Sunday, Dec. 20. The Bombers were unable to score until the third period.
Things got physical late in the third and Flin Flon amassed 18 infractions for 85 penalty minutes for the game. The Klippers had six infractions and 26 penalty minutes.
The Bombers play next on Jan. 5. They start the 2016 portion of the season hosting Yorkton.
