Kelly Carrington Staff Writer A scoreless first period between the Flin Flon Bombers and Humboldt Broncos later turned into the sixth shutout of the season for the Broncos. It was a low-scoring game as the Bauer Conference-leading Broncos picked up three markers over the Bombers last Friday night, Feb. 1. The 3-0 victory helped separate the Bombers and Broncos by another two points in the Bauer standings as well as the SJHL rankings. The Bombers' scoreless result wasn't for a lack of trying as they fired off 10 shots in the first period and a total of 24 shots on goaltender Matt Hrynkiw. Flin Flon's Brandon Wildung faced 43 shots, allowing three of them past him. The Broncos picked up their first goal of the night at 7:29 of the second period. The next frame saw almost the same situation as Carter Page made it a 2-0 game at 7:23. In an attempt to narrow Humboldt's lead, Flin Flon head coach Mike Reagan pulled Wildung for an extra attacker. The attempt backfired as the Broncos made it 3-0 with an empty net goal at 19:20. Throughout the course of the game, the teams were well behaved with only a handful of penalties assigned. The Bombers were handed two penalties in the second period as Brock Hounsell was in the sin bin for interference while teammate Brett Penner was in for elbowing. The third period saw two more penalties for Flin Flon as Penner was back in, this time for highsticking, while Konrad Litke was given two minutes for crosschecking. The Broncos had two calls themselves as the second period saw John Lawrence in for hooking while teammate Rhett Blackmur was in for holding. Leaving the ice down 3-0, the Bombers geared up for their game against the Battlefords North Stars the next night _ which resulted in a much better outcome.
