Getting their final four games of 2009 underway, the Bombers came up shorthanded after Tuesday's game in La Ronge. With one loss under their belts, the Bombers bounced back Wednesday night as they won 6-5 over the Battlefords North Stars. For any team, it's important to go at least .500 on a road series Ð and with Wednesday's win, the Bombers have a chance to move forward and surpass that mark. Wednesday's game started out with the North Stars on the scoreboard first with a goal against Matt Weninger just before the four-minute mark. But Alex Lamontagne was able to answer back for the Bombers, with help from Brennan Cox and Andrew Johnston, while on a power play, and evened the score up 1-1 at 8:47. Coming up behind him, a few minutes later, Brody Haygarth earned the team's second goal of the night with help from Lamontagne and Johnston. Ending the first period up 2-1, the Bombers were on fire in the second period. All three goals in the second 20 minutes of play came from the Maroon and White as Dominic Martel lit the lantern for Flin Flon's third goal Ð with assists going to Tanner Korchinski and Matty Lecours at 3:47. Nearing the 16-minute mark of the period, Lamontagne was up for his second goal of the night as he accepted the puck from Johnston and Cox on another power play Ð making it 4-1. And with less than three minutes on the clock, Taylor Thiessen made it 5-1 with help from Michael Young. Flin Flon earned their final goal of the game in the third period, but the scoring didn't end there. Mike Rey found the back of the net with less than a minute in for the Bombers' sixth goal Ð with helpers from Martel and Ryan Fox Ð but the North Stars were able to answer back with four goals. First, at 1:38, Ryan Anderson made it past Weninger Ð making it 6-2. Then it was Blake Tatchell with an unassisted goal at 7:26 for the team's third goal. Coming up next was Dane Muench at 13:08, followed by John Daley with the team's fifth and final goal of the night. The Bombers dominated the scoreboard for the majority of the game, but the North Stars were able to tighten their skates for the third period, making it a very close game. Ending Wednesday's game with two points, the Bombers were pushed back into first place of the SJHL, as the Weyburn Red Wings didn't play that night. Both the Bombers and Red Wings face-off this weekend as the Maroon and White are in Kindersley for a double-header while the Red Wings are in Nipawin Friday night and Melfort Saturday night. As of the end of the game Wednesday, the Bombers sat in first place of the SJHL with 51 points while the Red Wings were in a close second with 50 points. The Bombers and North Stars share the Bauer Conference, with the Stars rounding out second place with 43 points.
