Fans waited a whole week before seeing the Flin Flon Bombers battle at the Whitney Forum, and when the Maroon and White hit the ice this past Friday night, they meant business. The Bombers brought down the visiting Yorkton Terriers 4-1. Nearly 1,000 fans filled the Whitney to watch their boys challenge the Sherwood Conference team. Former Battlefords North Star Barrett Penner, who was recently traded to the Bombers, scored the final goal of the night, an open netter, and his second of the season as a Bomber. The humble forward, who has two goals and one assist in four games, says "being a Bomber is going extremely well." "I told my coach if I was going to be traded, I would want to be traded to the Bombers because I think they have the best chance at the championship," says the 20-year-old. Coach Mike Reagan says he's seeing what he thought he would see from Penner. "He knows what to bring to the game," says Reagan, adding that "he brings experience to the team." Penner, a Flaxcomb, SK native, says as a Bomber he hopes to "win and win it all. "This is a great team and it's great guys to work with." Penner says while sometimes the game can be hard, "I've got great linemates and it's easier than usual for me. "These guys are amazing to work with and I couldn't have asked for better," he says. Friday night's win was an important one for the Bombers, as it set them up to move past the La Ronge Ice Wolves in the Itech Conference on Saturday night. As of Saturday the Bombers had moved back into third place, passing the Ice Wolves by three points. Friday night's game between the Bombers and the Terriers started off slower than other games with a scoreless first period. The Bombers saw three penalties in the first 20 minutes of play, starting off with Robert Beaudry for boarding at 6:42 into the game. See 'Calls' on pg. Continued from pg. The Terriers took their turn next as Jordan Pawelec got his two minutes in the box for interference only seconds later. The calls went back and forth as Bomber Brennan Cox sat in the box for a couple of minutes for high sticking after 11:20 of play. The Terriers were also called on hooking as Derek Derkach sat out. And the final penalty of the period saw Michael Young in the box for interference at 19:39. The second period had more action than the first, with Bomber Cole Wilson scoring his second goal of the season and the team's first goal of the night only 2:26 into the period. Wilson's goal was helped by Kory Gursky and Beaudry. The Maroon and White got the ball rolling as the Terriers scored their first, and only, goal of the game in the second period. After only 4:54 of play, Carter Smith put the puck past Carsen Chubak, tying the score at one apiece. The rest of the second period was filled with penalties, as the Bombers saw Beaudry, J.M Allard and Penner in the box as the Terriers also had three penalties. Sitting out for Yorkton were Jordan Pawelec, Kevin Stringfellow, who was serving goalie Joel Danyluk's tripping call, and Kyle Black. With the second period over the Bombers headed to the dressing room, where they must have gotten a pep talk as they came back and scored another three goals in the final period. First up was Tommy Castonguay scoring at 3:18. Castonguay's goal was assisted by David Linsley and Dennis Kubat. Lighting the lantern for the home team the third time that night was Kubat, assisted by Reid MacLeod and Pierre-Luc Boucher at a time of 13:14. Penner scored the final goal of the night on an open net with only 30 seconds left. Penner's second goal as a Bomber was assisted by Young and Castonguay. The third period only saw one penalty as Bomber Allard sat in the box for interference. The Bombers outshot the Terriers 44-26. With a final score of 4-1, Reagan says it was a slower game, but still a win. "We were going through the motions this game and the guys turned it up later on," he says. "Chubak had some good saves tonight, some big saves." With the Bombers playing 11 games in November, Reagan says it's a big month for the team. The majority of the games this month are away, including the upcoming week with two games outside of town. Reagan says while the boys are away more often, they will be keeping lighter practices. "It's important they get rest and stay healthy," he says adding that "we will just be doing some skating to keep them in flow." The Bombers traveled to La Ronge Saturday night to take on the Ice Wolves, beating them 4-3 on the Ice Wolves' territory. The Bombers faced the Battlefords North Stars last night and tonight they head to Kindersley to take on the Klippers. The next home game will be Friday night as the Maroon and White take on the Humboldt Broncos.
