Bombers lose to Stars, still led league

Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Flin Flon Bombers have held a convincing lead in the SJHL standings for most of the season. After Tuesday's loss against the Battlefords North Stars, the Bombers held a one-point lead over the Yorkton Terriers, who sat with 37 points. The Bombers visited the Humboldt Broncos the following night, Wednesday, and the Terriers' next appearance came last night against the North Stars. Tuesday night, the Bombers and North Stars competed in one of the closest matches of the season. Both teams managed 35 shots, with a third period goal against Devin Buffalo giving the North Stars the 2-1 win. Battlefords got the game going with a first period marker at 4:56 against Buffalo. Bomber Landon Hiebert answered back at 8:33 of the same period with a marker to tie the game with help from Josh Roach and Greg Wiwcharuk. A scoreless second period left the teams tied at 1-1 as the Bombers fired off 13 shots and the North Stars managed 10. Dillon Forbes was the deciding factor as his goal at 7:22 of the third period gave the North Stars their home ice victory. In the third period, the Bombers fired off 14 shots, while Buffalo saw the puck 13Êtimes _ allowing one goal. Flin Flon had three power play opportunities to the North Stars' one. Neither team capitalized. Following the loss, the Bombers remained in first place in the SJHL with 38 points _ just one more than the Sherwood Conference-leading Yorkton Terriers. Flin Flon's 38 points were still six points above the Broncos after Tuesday's action, as they sat with 32 points. The Nipawin Hawks claimed third place in the Bauer Conference with 29 points _ 10 points ahead of the La Ronge Ice Wolves, who held sixth place with 19 points. The Weyburn Red Wings were sixth in the Sherwood Conference and last in the SJHL with 14 points. The Notre Dame Hounds earned second place in the same conference with 35 points with third place going to the Melville Millionaires with 30 points. Back in the Bauer Conference, the North Stars were fourth with 26 points as the Melfort Mustangs came in fifth with 20 points. The Kindersley Klippers claimed fourth in the Sherwood with 20 points as the Estevan Bruins picked up fifth with 18 points.
