Saturday night had the Flin Flon Bombers in Melfort as they ended their Christmas break and were ready to take on the Mustangs. Although head coach and GM Mike Reagan says it was a solid effort by the team, the Mustangs got past the Bombers 3-2 in overtime. Calvin Bartel was in net for the Bombers as he saw a total of 27 shots come his way during the game and the Bombers surpassed the home team as they had 35 shots on Ilia Ejoy. The first period saw the Mustangs start the scoring as Matt Hill got one past Bartel, breaking the goose egg to make it 1-0. While the Bombers didnÕt find the back of the net in the first period, the Maroon and White had 13 opportunities. The first period saw a number of penalties as Reid MacLeod was sentenced to two minutes for slashing, as was Bartel. Melfort saw their own Jason Walker behind the glass for high sticking while Bomber Harley Garrioch was also called on high sticking. The Mustangs rounded out the first period as they had Cam Oliphant for tripping, Nick Kalnicki in the box for hooking and Hill was in for tripping. With a score of 1-0 for the home team, the Bombers were in need of a goal as the second period got underway. Mustang Hill was on the ball as he got another past Bartel, but Cole Wilson, assisted by Scott Day, stole his thunder as he found the back of the net less than 40 seconds later. The second 20 minutes of play saw a few more penalties. Jean-Sebastien Bergeron was called on interference and teammate David Linsley sat out his two minutes for interference as well. It was between Barrett Penner and Riley Clark as they fought in the middle of the period. Each saw the other side of the glass as they were out for five minutes. The Bombers received a bench penalty as there were too many men on the ice. Pierre-Luc Boucher sat out the two minutes for the team. It was 2-1 for the Mustangs going into the third period, but the Bombers kept their focus. Dennis Kubat tied things up late into the third period with an unassisted goal past Ejoy. And with only one penalty during the period, the teams prepared for over time. And although there was only one shot on Bartel, it was all it took as the Mustangs took the Bombers down 3-2. The Bombers and Mustangs met up the next night in the Whitney Forum, but it was another story as the 1,335 fans cheered on the Maroon and White to a 5-1 victory. The Bombers hit the ice tonight against the Humboldt Broncos and again tomorrow against the Notre Dame Hounds. Both games are in the Whitney Forum.
