Coming off a win over the Notre Dame Hounds, the Bombers were feeling good about their prospects in Weyburn last Friday night. Though the Bombers were on the short end of the stick with a 5-3 loss to the Red Wings, Flin Flon head coach and GM Mike Reagan said it was a well played game for both teams. "Coming off the win, we felt good," says Reagan, noting that they were in Weyburn to compete. "We know we are a good club and we thought it was going to be two good games, and that's the way it ended up," he says, referring to the double-header weekend. The Bombers held a 3-1 edge over the Red Wings in the second period. Though they were unable to keep that lead going, Reagan says both teams showed great play-off style. "They were both fast paced and entertaining hockey (games)," says the coach. "There were two colleges there (watching)," says Reagan, "and it was the best hockey they had seen in a while." With the skill level of the game where Reagan expected it to be, he says they go into every game with the same frame of mind Ð just a few adjustments here and there. "We try to concentrate on what we have to do," he says. "We play our game... and we feel we we should be able to beat anyone." The Bombers stuck to their game plan, and although they weren't able to come out with a win, Reagan says he had no complaints about how the team played. Reagan says with playoff-style games underway, he expects to see nothing less. "You can't just turn it on in the playoffs, it's not a light switch," he says. Both teams showed up with their game faces on and ready to fight for the two points. Getting on the scoreboard for the Maroon and White were Tommy Castonguay, Michael Young and Brennan Cox. The following is a summary of the game: It was a tight game between the Bombers and the Red Wings as just over 800 fans watched in the Weyburn Colosseum Friday night. The home team got the scoring started early with a goal against Matt Weninger in the first 50 seconds of play. It took some time, but Castonguay, with help from Alex Lamontagne and Dominic Martel, answered back with a goal to end out the first period. As the first period came to an end, the teams sat tied at one apiece with the Bombers holding 12 shots to their name, while Weninger had the puck come his way eight times. Penalties were handed out to the Bombers for holding (Mitch Dougall) and hooking (Young, Patrick Sitko) Coming back for more in the second period, the Bombers showed the Red Wings they were in town to compete for those two points. Young started the scoring off with a goal at the 4:17 mark, with help from Doug McLeod. With the Bombers ahead 2-1, Cox padded the lead with a powerplay goal after accepting a pass from Young just before the 10-minute mark. But that's all she wrote for the Bombers as the Red Wings tied things up before the end of the period with two goals Ð one at the 12-minute mark, the other at 18:24. Serving the only penalty in the second period, the Red Wings were in for tripping Ð giving the Bombers the power play they needed. By the end of the second period, both teams had fired off another 12 shots on net. Going into the third period, the Bombers were tied with the Red Wings with three goals each, and that held strong for the majority of the period. But the Red Wings were able to get past Weninger for a goal at the 15:08 mark before earning an empty net marker with seconds left in the game. It was a tough battle for the Bombers, but Reagan reiterates a "good effort" was put up by the Maroon and White. Saturday night, the teams were at it again as the Red Wings claimed their territory once again. The Bombers went home after a 4-3 loss at the hands of the home team.
