The Flin Flon Bombers pulled off another much needed win Saturday, skating away with a lopsided 11-2 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds. The Maroon and White had glided onto the Whitney Forum ice with hopes of making it to the .500 club. Three periods of play and one moose leg circle celebration later, the Bombers are in the club, and proud of it. "We're very excited with the results from the weekend," said coach Mike Reagan. According to Reagan, two very different games were played Friday, when the Bombers beat Estevan 3-1, and Saturday. "Friday we had to grind out and it was more of a playoff game," he said, "and on Saturday, everything fell into place for us." The latter game got started with Bomber Carsen Chubak between the pipes, with the Andre Guau in the net for the Hounds. After 8:14 of play, the Bombers were on the scoreboard. Tommy Castonguay (19) got the scoring off to a start, assisted by Robert Beaudry (22). The first period was dominated by the Bombers, with four more goals. Myles Masse (15) scored the second of the night, assisted by Cameron MacKinnon (21) and Cole Wilson (26). Castonguay (19) scored the third goal of the game, and his second. It was assisted by David Linsley (41) and J.M. Allard (24). With the score 3-0 for the home side, Pierre-Luc Boucher (44) scored an unassisted marker 16:13 into the first period. Just six seconds later, Reid Macleod (18) scored the fifth and final goal of the first period, off the face off. The goal was assisted by Dennis Kubat (39) and Myles Masse (15). The Notre Dame Hounds got things started in the second period with the first goal of the evening, bringing the score to 5-1, for the Bombers. The rest of the first half of the period was scoreless, until 10:41 when Reid MacLeod (18) scored the first goal of the second period for the home team. The goal was assisted by Dennis Kubat (39) and Masse (15). The Hounds decided to change their goalie, replacing Guau with Antoine Desrosiers in hopes of halting the bleeding. But both Cole Wilson (26) and Robert Beaudry (22) assisted Jordan Cherney (17) in scoring another goal for the Bombers. With the score 7-1, the Bombers still hadn't had enough and managed another goal before the end of the second period. It came from Kubat (39), assisted by Pierre-Luc Boucher (44) and Reid MacLeod (18). At the end of the second period, the score was 8-1 in favour of Flin Flon. Starting off the third period, coach Mike Reagan put goalie Riley Ross in between the pipes to get some playing time. Notre Dame was trailing by yet another goal after only 1:39 of play into the third period. Dustyn Clegg (28) managed his team's ninth marker of the night, assisted by Castonguay (19) and David Linsley (41). Less than four minutes later, the Bombers padded an already massive lead. This time Shawn McNulty (14), with his first goal of the game, lit the lamp on a feed from Michael Young (6) and J.M. Allard (24). The final goal of the night for the Bombers was scored by captain Kubat (39) and assisted by MacLeod (18). The Hounds had one left in them and scored the final goal of the night against Ross, bringing the final score to 11-2 for the Bombers. The Bombers had a total of 35 shots on goal, while the Hounds had 30 shots. The victory pushed the Bombers to even in the win-loss column, causing Reagan to declare that "this was a big weekend for us." "It was a turnaround," he said, "and we're back on a winning track." Reagan said the high score and back-to-back wins is "good for the moral of the team and it makes the players feel good." After getting to the .500 club, Reagan says "we're hoping to get well above that." And he adds, "it's still early on." Assistant coach Clayton Quinn says he's "happy with the way things went." After seeing the scoreboard light up time after time Saturday, Quinn says the players "didn't lose focus," which is an important part of the game. The Bombers face off next against the Yorkton Terriers tonight at the Whitney Forum. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
