With less than a few wins under their belts for the month of January, the Flin Flon Bombers were looking to turn things around Wednesday night as they were up against the Notre Dame Hounds. The Bombers came out and showed Notre Dame what they were made of as 500 people went to the Duncan McNeill Arena to see their Hounds get taken down 5-3 by the visiting Bombers. Even though the Hounds were on the charts first, Flin Flon tied up the first goal and continued on with another four throughout the game. Jean Sebastian Bergeron was first on the docket for the Bombers as he found the back of the net while Michael Young backed him up and broke the tie. Carsen Chubak was in net, letting in only three of his 33 shots on net. And it was Cole Wilson who sealed the deal on an empty net late in the third period. The Hounds got the ball rolling early in the first period when Rylan Schwartz got the first goal of the game past Chubak on a power play, with help from Kyle Ireland and Thomas Williams. The first 20 minutes of play saw only a few penalties with Dennis Kubat and Harley Garrioch in the box for roughing while Marc-Andre Nadeau and Travis Montgomery sat out for tripping. Chubak saw 10 shots come his way in the first, but the Bombers snuck by the Hounds with 12 shots on Mark Currie. The second period would be more Flin Flon than Notre Dame as the Bombers scored two of their goals for the night. Bergeron was up, making it 1-1, after being fed from Reid MacLeod and Barrett Penner, after 10:29. Almost two minutes later it was all up to Young as he broke the tie on a powerplay, giving the Bombers a 2-1 lead over the home team. Kubat and Pierre-Luc Boucher made their passes to Young as he scored. But the Hounds wouldnÕt take it sitting down as they got back on the horse and got another one past Chubak. The Hounds faced another 10 shots on net from the Bombers while Chubak fended off nine of his 10 shots. And while the Bombers hit the scoreboard more often in the period, the Hounds were in the pound a number of times with everything from an ineligible player to tripping, cross checking and roughing. And Wilson sat his two minutes out for roughing as well. With a 2-2 tie, the Bombers and Hounds were back on the ice to battle it out. And they did just that. The Hounds broke the tie with a goal from Schwartz, on an unassisted short handed shot. But the Bombers took no mercy as Matt Dyck, with help from Myles Masse and MacLeod, got their goal back, and tied things up again. But leave it to MacLeod to break the tie and find his way past Currie, after being fed from Masse and Young on a power play. With the score 4-3 for the Bombers, the Hounds coach pulled Currie in hopes of gaining another goal late in the period. But Wilson saw right through that plan as he made it to the net and scored for a 5-3 win over the Hounds. The third period only saw one penalty as Ireland was put away for tripping. Chubak stood strong again as he has 13 shots come his way. And although the Bombers only got nine more shots on net, it was enough. They were outshot 33-30, but the final score showed it didnÕt matter. The Bombers play tonight in Weyburn as they continue their road trip. And itÕs off to Estevan tomorrow night to take on the Bruins.
