The Humboldt Broncos saw to it that six goals wouldn't be enough for the Flin Flon Bombers to end 2006 on a winning note. The Bombers suffered their 26th loss of the season Tuesday in a 7-6 heartbreaker at home versus the league-leading powerhouse. The Maroon and White started out with promise, leading 2-0 after the first period on the strength of goals from Dustyn Clegg (assisted by Nick Collition and captain Blake Rolston) and Dennis Kubat (Bradey Fidierchuk, Reid MacLeod). MacLeod from Kubat and Pierre-Luc Boucher made it 3-0 at the 5:38 mark of the second. But Humboldt stormed back with two quick lamp-lighters on the powerplay courtesy of Russ Nielsen (Brady Heintz, Brayden Klimosko) and Klimosko (Heintz, Jordan Schindel). Clegg's second of the night, assisted by Collition and Rolston, gave the Bombers a bit more breathing room at the 11:22 mark. The thrill was short-lived, as three goals in little over four minutes saw the visitors close out the middle period with a 5-4 lead. The Humboldt goals went to Steven Schroeder (Tory Allan), captain Colin Wilson (Brett Kuglin), and Klimosko (Heintz, Cory Knaus). The third period had the announced crowd of 1,039 Bomber faithful on the edge of their seats. Unassisted, Mackenzie Groenewegen evened the score at 6:25 of the third. With less than five minutes left, the Broncos, shorthanded no less, retook the lead when an unassisted Laurent Benjamin got one by Bomber goalie Mike Nichol. Not to be outdone, Nick Collition tied things up yet again on a feed from Kyle Lundale at the 18:52 mark. This one seemed destined for OT. Then it all came crashing down a final time for Flin Flon when Jordan Schindel (Klimosko, Heintz) scored Humboldt's seventh goal of the night at the 19:01 mark. If there's one positive the Bombers can take away from the game, it's that they outshot their worthy opponents 33 to 29. With the loss, the Bombers ended December with just three wins in nine games. In four of those games, Flin Flon allowed seven or more goals. The Bombers have now begun a 17-day Christmas break. Their next game is Saturday, Jan. 6, versus the Weyburn Red Wings at the Whitney Forum.
