The Flin Flon Bombers beat the La Ronge Ice Wolves, a Sherwood Division rival, twice last week to continue their red-hot streak.
Heading into Tuesday’s game in Nipawin, the Bombers had won five games in a row and were victorious in 12 of their previous 13 games.
“I think it just comes down to our guys buying in,” head coach and general manager Mike Reagan said of the team’s success. “They have been very focused on the system we have presented them with. I think they believe in it.”
Flin Flon beat La Ronge 4-1 on Friday, Jan. 15 on the road and shut out the Ice Wolves 5-0 the following night in front of an announced crowd of 707 at the Whitney Forum.
“I was happy obviously with the results, outscoring them 9-1 in the two games,” said Reagan, whose team recorded 99 shots over the weekend while holding La Ronge to 61 shots.
Most of La Ronge’s 32 shots on Saturday came outside of the top of the circles, Reagan said.
“When you do that, you make the job of the goaltender a lot easier,” he added.
Goalie Brenden Newton picked up both wins for Flin Flon. He had 28 saves on Friday and 32 on Saturday to earn his first shutout.
Regular starting netminder Zac Robidoux was injured two weeks back, and Reagan said Newton’s strong play has allowed Robidoux not to be rushed back.
Heading into Tuesday’s action, the Bombers were 24-13-0-4 on the season and fifth in the league standings with 50 points.
The Bombers began a four-game road trip Tuesday night in Nipawin, after The Reminder went to press. They’re at Notre Dame on Wednesday, Estevan on Friday and Weyburn on Saturday.
The Bombers return to the Whitney Forum on Friday, Jan. 29 to host the Weyburn Red Wings.
