Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Flin Flon Bombers came out of their losing streak with three consecutive wins this past weekend. After leaving the Whitney Forum with a sour taste in their mouth from last Tuesday's 10-2 loss against La Ronge, the Bombers were looking for revenge Friday night. The Maroon and White earned their two points, giving the Ice Wolves one, in a 4-3 shootout victory. Saturday night, the Bombers were in Humboldt to face the ever-tough Broncos. They worked together to defeat the home team 4-3. Sunday night was a similar story as the Bombers earned their third win in as many nights. Flin Flon was in the Battlefords to take on the North Stars and earned a 4-1 victory. P.J. Musico guarded the mesh all weekend for the Bombers. With over 130 shots in three games, Musico had just six sneak past him. Friday It was time for the tables to turn as the Bombers were in La Ronge. Though Flin Flon didn't blow the home side out of the water by eight goals, as had happened to them, the Bombers did get the points they needed. At the end of the first period, the Bombers were leading 2-1 as Michael Young and Riley Storzuk each had a marker. But the Ice Wolves took hold of the game in the second and earned two goals to take a 3-2 lead. La Ronge's third goal of the game was on a penalty shot. The third period had Andrew Johnston scoring a big goal for the Bombers as he tied things up with less than two minutes to go. As the buzzer sounded, the teams prepared for overtime. No shots were fired in OT, which sent the teams to a shootout. La Ronge started the shooting but were unable to beat Musico. The Bombers' first shot, coming from Corey Tyrell, was a bust. La Ronge's second shot made it past Musico Ð as Johnston got his second goal of the night. With the shootout tied, the Ice Wolves and Bombers went through four more shooters before Flin Flon's Luke Kasteel earned the second marker. La Ronge wasn't able to get past Musico and the Bombers took the win. Throughout the game, power plays weren't a strong suit as the Bombers were 0/4 and the Ice Wolves were 1/4. Saturday The Humboldt Broncos have always been a tough team for the Bombers. A late goal in the first period from Devin Stillar gave the Bombers the lead over Humboldt. A shorthanded goal from Stillar in the second period gave the Bombers a more comfortable lead over Humboldt, but it didn't last long. The Broncos broke Musico's shutout and earned their first marker of the night. Just three minutes later, Johnston was on the case as he made it 3-1 for the Bombers. Humboldt had one last effort in them in the third period, making it 3-2 for Flin Flon, but couldn't muster that third goal to tie the game. The Bombers beat Humboldt in their own barn as Musico faced 50 shots compared to Flin Flon's 28 on Andrew Bodnarchuk. When it came to power plays, the Bombers missed their one chance, but their penalty kill didn't allow a goal on three opportunities. Sunday It was an afternoon game on Sunday that gave the Bombers their third win in as many games. The Bombers faced the Battleford North Stars for the first time this season and took no prisoners as they earned a 4-1 win. Stillar was on fire as he had a hat trick with two goals in the second and one in the third. A scoreless first period sent the teams back to the dressing room to prepare for the second. Stillar had control of the scoreboard with a power play goal right off the hop and then a late goal to give Flin Flon a 2-0 lead. Starting the third period, Stillar scored the team's third goal before the North Stars earned their first of the night on a power play. Battlefords coach Ken Pearson pulled Graham Hildebrand from between the pipes to get an extra attacker on the ice, but it only helped the Bombers as Jesse Mychan sealed the 4-1 envelope with an empty net goal. The power plays were similar for both teams. The Bombers were 1/4 and the North Stars were 1/5. Flin Flon hosted the Nipawin Hawks last night and are set to take on the Notre Dame Hounds on Friday. This Saturday, the team will host the North Stars in their second match-up of the season Ð and the month. Leaving their five-game losing streak behind, the Bombers ended their road trip above .500.
