Wednesday's road game clinched the end of September with a 3-2 record for the Flin Flon Bombers. The 7-4 win over the Nipawin Hawks was what the team needed to get back on their feet. After losing their last game, Saturday against the La Ronge Ice Wolves, head coach and GM Mike Reagan made it clear they were going to have to work hard. The Bombers had a few good days of practice ahead of them after the double header weekend they faced against the Ice Wolves. After Saturday's game, Reagan brought back his well-known quote that a good team never loses two in a row. The Bombers made that clear as they outshot the home team 41-33 and started the scoring just 2:32 into the first period. Dominic Martel started the scoring frenzy on a power play with help from Scott Brkich and David Dykstra. The Hawks tied things up near the 14-minute mark with a power play goal of their own. But Jeff Lorenz came back to break the tie to end out the first period. Earning a helper to the team's second goal were Mitch Dougall and Jesse Mychan. There were only a few penalties to mention in the first period as the Bombers were in the sin bin for tripping (Michael Young) and holding the puck (David Roper). The Hawks served their time for two hooking penalties. Coming back in the second period with the lead over the Hawks, the game was tied once again by Nipawin with a goal at the 7:21 mark by Jonathan Ceci. With things tied at 2-2, the Hawks were able to pull ahead with the lead for the first time in the game as Cory Hodgins made it 3-2 for the home team. But there was plenty more hockey to be played as Flin Flon's Mathieu Lecours tied things up at 3-3 with help from Tanner Korchinski and Andrew Johnston. Lorenz scored his second of the night with help from Patrick Sitco. But that wasn't enough for the Maroon and White as Devin Mitzner found the back of the net at 14:58 to earn the last goal of the period and make it 5-3 for the visitors. Flin Flon's Sitko served the period's only penalty. With things sitting at 5-3, the start of the third period was scoreless. Dykstra was able to light the lantern on a power play at the 15:34 mark to make it 6-3 for the Bombers with help from Alex Lamontagne and Brkich. The Hawks were able to get one more past Klynt Spencer to make it 6-4, but it still wasn't enough for a win as Dykstra scored his second of the night, an empty net goal, to wrap things up. With help from Mitzner and Young, Dykstra's goal made it 7-4 for the win. A few more penalties were given out in the third period with a bench penalty (Lamontagne), tripping (Shane Goodrunning), high sticking (Mychan) and unsportsmanlike conduct (Doug McLeod) were called against the Bombers. The Maroon and white continued their road trip last night in Notre Dame before heading to Estevan on Saturday and Weyburn on Sunday. The next home games for the Bombers will be Friday and Saturday as they host the Kindersley Klippers.
