The last time the Bombers and Mustangs matched up it was a very one-sided game Ð for Flin Flon. But Friday night, things evened out as the Melfort played host to the Bauer Conference's top team. The home team earned one more marker as they took the 3-2 victory and two points from the Bombers. Saturday night, the Bombers tried their luck in Humboldt, but were unsuccessful in overtime as the Broncos took the victory 5-4. Friday night's match up against the Melfort Mustangs was expected to be physical, as the teams share some bad blood. A scoreless first period saw only a few penalties between the two teams as the Bombers were in for hooking (Ryan Fox) while the Mustangs were in for interference, holding, roughing and tripping. The second period was when the scoring action began Ð for both teams. Melfort got the ball rolling just shy of the four-minute mark on the clock, which was followed by Deven Stillar's unassisted goal on a power play to make it 1-1. The Mustangs were up with another goal, but the Stillar answered back against his former team with help from Mike Rey and Michael Young to end the second period. Tied at 2-2, the Mustangs made their way past Weninger for the their third and final goal of the game Ð giving them the 3-2 victory. More penalties were given to the teams throughout the game for roughing, elbowing, delay of game, hooking and high sticking. Saturday was a different game for the Bombers as they visited the Broncos' barn. David Dykstra (Brennan Cox, Fox) got the ball going in the first period with the lone goal of the 20 minutes. Hitting the ice for the second period, the Broncos fired off two goals within the first 11 minutes, one being a power play goal, to make it 2-1 for them. Dominic Martel (Alex Lamontagne, Dykstra) had a timely goal, with less than four minutes to go in the period, as he made it 2-2. Following the second period, the teams were ready to get going as the Broncos once again started the scoring gambit with a goal against Weninger at 4:01. Andrew Johnston followed suit, at 13:30, with an unassisted goal to tie it once again. Taking the lead, for the second time that game, Fox put one past Andrew Bodnarchuk with help from Dykstra and Corey Tyrell at 16:50. But the Bombers' glory didn't last long as Humboldt tied the game at 4-4 with less than two minutes to go. The Bombers and Broncos played the first 3:30 of overtime, but the home team's goal over Weninger won them the game. The Bombers hosted the Nipawin Hawks last night. With the regular season coming to an end, the Bombers now have five games remaining Ð three home games and two on the road. The Bombers play host to the Battlefords North Stars this weekend on both Friday and Saturday.
