Bombers drop to Ice Wolves, third in SJ

Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Flin Flon Bombers haven't had a successful December and Tuesday's road game against the La Ronge Ice Wolves was no different. The Bombers dropped 4-1 to the conference rivals after going down 3-0 heading into the third period. The Bombers remain on top of the Bauer Conference with 42 points, but their lead is dwindling as the Humboldt Broncos sat with 40 points. Flin Flon held onto third place in the SJHL following Tuesday's game as the Yorkton Terriers remained on top with 49 points _ followed by the Notre Dame Hounds with 45 points. The Melville Millionaires sat only one points behind the Bombers, at 41, and claimed third place in the Sherwood Conference. Wednesday night, the Bombers took on the Battlefords North Stars. The conference rivals sat fourth in the Bauer with 34 points. Tuesday, the Bombers and Ice Wolves were evenly matched in the first period with a scoreless game. The Bombers fired off 11 shots in the first period while Devin Buffalo picked up 19 saves. In the second period, the Bombers were consistent with another 11 shots on net, while the Ice Wolves handed off 15 to Buffalo. It was a quick 2-0 game as La Ronge picked up their first marker at the 30-second mark well as a shorthanded goal at 4:14. Buffalo was on target in for the majority of the period, but the Ice Wolves found the back of the net at 19:44. In the third period, the Bombers earned their lone goal of the night as Cole McCaig made it a 3-1 game at 12:44. Hoping to score a second goal with six skaters on the ice, head coach and GM Mike Reagan pulled Buffalo in the last of the period. At 19:38, the Ice Wolves made it a 4-1 game for the win. It meant the Bombers dropped the first game of their final road trip of 2012. Having held onto top spot in the SJHL for the majority of the season, the loss left the Bombers in third place. Tuesday's loss had the Bombers sitting with 42 points and a 21-12-0-0 record, two points better than the Broncos in the Bauer Conference. The Nipawin Hawks claimed third place with 37 points _ nine points above the Melfort Mustangs who claimed sixth place with 26 points. The North Stars held fourth with 34 points as the Ice Wolves sat in fifth with 29 following Tuesday's game. Wednesday night, the Bombers took on the North Stars while the Broncos faced the Melville Millionaires _ who sat third in the Sherwood Conference and fourth in the SJHL with 41 points.
