Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Flin Flon Bombers have fallen from the top of the SJHL ladder and sat in third place following this weekend's action. Perched in first for the majority of the season, the Bombers called third place home with 42 points _ five behind the league-leading Yorkton Terriers. The Bombers lost 5-3 to the Notre Dame Hounds Saturday night at the Whitney Forum _ keeping them at 42 points and giving them a 21-11-0-0 record. Notre Dame moved into second place in the SJHL with 45 points and a 21-9-0-3 record. The Hounds dominated the scoreboard Saturday night as they were up 3-1 by the end of the first period. With Flin Flon down 2-0, Tanner Clark earned his second goal of the season at 11:17 of the first to make it a 2-1 game. Notre Dame had earlier picked up two quick goals _ one at 3:33 and a power play marker at 6:58. The team's third goal of the period came at 18:07. Flin Flon scored the two lone goals in the second period to tie things up. Dillan McCombie picked up his 11th goal of the season at 6:43 on a power play with help from Brandt Weldon and Josh Road. Later in the period, at 17:19, Riley Storzuk earned the team's third goal to tie the game with help from Brett Boehm and Landon Hiebert. The third period sealed the deal for the Hounds with two more goals. The Hounds picked up a marker at 7:51 before scoring an empty net goal, at 19:33. Devin Buffalo started in net Saturday, but as the Hounds were up 3-1 by the end of the first period, head coach and GM Mike Reagan gave him a break and put in Brandon Wildung. A scoreless second period gave the Bombers the chance to catch up as they tied the game 3-3. The third period was the Bombers' downfall as the Hounds scored two more goals _ one against Wildung and one on an empty net. Eight chances The Bombers had eight chances for power play goals throughout the night as they capitalized on one of them _ similar to the Hounds, who earned one goal on three chances. The Whitney Forum saw one of the smallest crowds this season with 563 fans cheering the team on _ a far cry from the 1,000-plus who could once fill a Tuesday night game. Home Record Saturday night was the Bombers' final home game of the 2012 portion of the season. The Maroon and White hold a 14-4-0-0 record on home ice with nine home games remaining after the Christmas break. The Bombers will host the Weyburn Red Wings, Nipawin Hawks, Humboldt Broncos for a double-header, Battlefords North Stars, Yorkton Terriers, Melfort Mustangs and La Ronge Ice Wolves. The Bombers will end out the regular season on Feb. 26 against the Mustangs _ just as they opened the season in September. For now, the Bombers look to a four-game road series in five days. The team traveled to La Ronge last night, after The Reminder went to press, to face the Ice Wolves. Tonight, the team takes on the Battlefords North Stars before a one-day break. Friday and Saturday, the Bombers will face the Kindersley Klippers for a doubleheader before heading home for the Christmas break. The Bombers will have nearly a two-week break before returning to the ice Jan. 4 for their first game of 2013 in La Ronge. From there, the Bombers will face another five-day break before hosting the Red Wings.
