Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Bombers took a lead in the first period over the Humboldt Broncos last Wednesday night and kept it going for the remainder of the game. Flin Flon downed the ever-tough Broncos 8-3 at the Whitney Forum, having been in search of a big win. Deven Stillar's first-period goal held for the Bombers as they scored the lone goal in the opening frame. In the second period, Corey Tyrell was quick on his feet as he scored the team's second goal with only 16 seconds gone off the clock. With the score sitting at 2-0, the Broncos got one past PJ Musico for the first time with 1:30 missing from the clock. The Bombers didn't let that bother them, however, as Brandt Weldon scored the team's third goal not long after. Leading 3-1, the Bombers scored two more goals Ð a power play marker from Eric Millisor and then a late-period goal from Riley Storzuk Ð to end out the period. The Broncos stayed put with their one goal for that period as the Bombers shot ahead 5-1. Scoring The third period saw more scoring action as the Bombers, once again, opened fire with a second goal from Tyrell. Humboldt scored their second goal of the night just shy of the seven-minute mark. But the Broncos' chances of catching up to the Bombers were diminishing as Steven Virtanen scored Flin Flon's seventh goal of the night. One more marker from the Bombers, by captain Ryan Fox, gave the home side eight on the night. The Broncos earned one more goal late in the third period, but it wasn't nearly enough to bridge the large gap. Ending with a final score of 8-3, the game was just what the Bombers needed. After the Christmas break, Flin Flon hosted the 17 and Under Sweden team, but came up shorthanded. A few nights later, the Maroon and White welcomed the La Ronge Ice Wolves into their barn, but were unable to get the win. Wednesday night was big for the Bombers as it ended a five-game losing skid. Next on the docket, the Bombers hosted the Nipawin Hawks Saturday night. As the puck dropped after The Reminder went to press, please see Wednesday's paper for coverage of the game.
