It looked like it was going to be a repeat from Friday night as the Bombers laid their passion and effort on the ice as they hosted the Yorkton Terriers for game two last Saturday. But both the team and the fans were not expecting a loss. The Maroon and White, according to head coach and GM Mike Reagan, gave it their all and deserved the two points. With nearly 40 shots on net, the Bombers Òshould have won the hockey gameÓ against the Yorkton Terriers Saturday night, according to head coach and GM Mike Reagan. The Bombers got the scoring started in the first period, but Yorkton answered back and, ultimately for the win, with a score of 4-3. It was a tough loss for the Bombers as Reagan said they worked hard. ÒI give credit to the guys. But Òwe made several mistakes and every mistake we made ended up in the back of our net,Ó says the coach. The boys in maroon and white shot off 39 shots to Devin Peters throughout the game, but were only able to get past him three times. ÒWe were working hard, but the goals werenÕt coming. It wasnÕt for a lack of trying though, thatÕs for sure,Ó says Reagan. As the team headed to their dressing room, the coach gave an after game speech Ð like most games. He told the team it was a ÒfrustratingÓ loss. ÒIf we come out with that same effort, if we come out like we did tonight, we could win a lot of hockey games,Ó he told them. Reagan made it clear the effort was on the ice, but they couldnÕt get the win. ÒNot getting rewarded is pretty frustrating,Ó he said. As well as making it clear that the effort was there, Reagan told the team they deserved better. ÒBut it was the little things that cost us tonight,Ó he said. Going along the same lines as Reagan, goaltender Ryan Kerpan says the effort was there from the guys in front. ÒThe guys worked hard,Ó he said, ÒBut I let them down. I didnÕt play my best game.Ó Kerpan says though the team was working well together, he wasnÕt on his game 100 per cent and let a few goals slip by. ÒEveryone played well,Ó he said. ÒI just wasnÕt there to back them up.Ó Reagan has put Kerpan in the net for the last few starts and things seem to be working well. But there are always mistakes made. ÒWe havenÕt been able to find consistency through the lineup,Ó says the coach. Last season, Reagan said he didnÕt like to not start a goalie if he was hot. And that strategy carries through to the whole team. ÒWhen we find a guy who will take the bull by the horns, we will stick with him,Ó says Reagan. SaturdayÕs game had the Bombers fighting for a win to break their streak of splitting their double-headers. But the Maroon and White couldnÕt get the ÒWÓ as they fell short to the Terriers. The following is a game summary between the Bombers and the Terriers: It was a beauty from the blue line as defensemen Harley Garrioch slapped the first goal of the night past Peters in the first period with help from Alex Lamontagne and Reid McLeod. The Bombers were off to a good start as they sat with a 1-0 lead over the Terriers for nearly 10 minutes. But Yorkton had other plans for the Maroon and White as they fired off two goals before the end of the first period. The shots on goal were a little low for both teams as Kerpan was handed off eight while the Bombers passed nine to Peters. See 'Bombers' on pg. Continued from pg. Devin Mitzner even things out as he scored the home teamÕs second goal of the night, with help from Garrioch, just shy of five minutes into the second period. With things tied at 2-2, the Terriers just couldnÕt let it be as they got another one past Kerpan to break the tie. Though they had 16 shots on net, the Bombers couldnÕt break the tie in the second period. But early in the third Mitzner was back on the ice and looking for revenge. He accepted a pass from Mathieu Lecours and Garrioch for the teamÕs third goal on a power play Ð to tie things up again. The next goal was anyoneÕs game as things were tied at 3-3. But it was the Terriers who found that whole for their fourth goal, and last, of the night. The last 20 minutes of play saw the Bombers hand off another 14 shots to Peters while Kerpan had it a little easier with only two shots on net. It was an important weekend for Kerpan as he had his father in the crowd watching Ð which he says can be a little Ònerve racking.Ó ÒBut I havenÕt seen him in quite a while, so it was good,Ó says the goalie. Looking back on the season so far, assistant coach Trevor Sack says the team is overall OK with where they are sitting. ÒWe are behind first place,Ó he says, noting that the team was tied for second with the Melfort Mustangs. Sack says there are always going to be games Òwhen you look back and think, Ôoh, we should have won that one,ÕÓ but overall the team is sitting in second place in the Itech Conference. ÒThatÕs how we have to look at it for the rest of the month, any ways,Ó he says. And being tied for second place with the Mustangs was going to prove for an interesting game Wednesday as the Bombers traveled to Melfort. Tonight, the Bombers will host the Notre Dame Hounds before heading on the road to Nipawin and then Humboldt.
