The Flin Flon Bombers had some trouble Friday night as they couldnÕt get past the Estevan Bruins as often as they would have liked. The team had a ÒdisappointingÓ first period, according to head coach and GM Mike Reagan, noting the team was down by one goal to the visiting Bruins. But all in all, the Bombers found their sticks and were able to beat goalie Tommy Legault twice in the third period for the 4-3 win over the Bruins. Friday was a tough night for the Maroon and White in terms of power plays as they had two chances with a five-on-three advantage but were unable to put the puck in the back of the net. Reagan says episodes like that made for a frustrating game. ÒOur power plays and our D-men struggled tonight,Ó says the coach. ÒAnd our top four were average.Ó With that said, the coach says Òbut we still found a way to win.Ó And it was two goals in the third period that brought it home for the Bombers in game one of a double-header weekend. Though the team had some tough breaks, they also had some luck on their side as Reagan says Dominic MartelÕs goal Ð which tied the game at three in the third period Ð saw the puck bounce off his stick. ÒIt tied the game and it was a huge goal of us,Ó says the coach. Reagan called the game a frustrating win Ð but itÕs Òstill a win.Ó The coach says the Bombers were going to have to step things up for the next night. ÒThere is no question we need to come out with a better effort,Ó he says. ÒEstevan didnÕt come here to lose four points. ÒItÕs going to be important to come out with a better effort than we did tonight.Ó As for the BombersÕ effort, Reagan says he is still trying to figure things out. ÒWe have the second best power play in the league,Ó he says. ÒBut it just wasnÕt clicking. The guys werenÕt on the same page. ÒThey were trying to do something other than what we were trying to accomplish.Ó The following is a summary from FridayÕs game between the Bombers and the Bruins: Matt Weninger strapped on the pads for the Maroon and White as he and the Bombers prepared for a tough game against the visiting Bruins. Nearly 700 fans were in attendance to watch game one of the double-header weekend with Estevan. And they were treated to an interesting game from their hometown boys. Mitch Dougall got the scoring started in the first period with help from Ryan Toporowski and Doug McLeod just before the five-minute mark. That goal stood for the Bombers for a few minutes before Estevan found the back of the net and tied it at one apiece. And to break the tie, with just a few seconds on the clock, the Bruins got past Weninger for their second goal of the night. As for shots on goal in the first period, the numbers were low for the Bombers. They fired off 13 on the Bruins while Weninger had 10 come his way. Keeping on their scoring roll, the Bruins opened fire in the second period, getting past Weninger for a third time. As the Bombers sat down 3-1, they were hungry but couldnÕt get past Legault for some time. It wasnÕt until there was only 15 seconds left on the clock when Reid McLeod found the back of the net with help from Alex Lamontagne and Tommy Castonguay. The Bombers brought the score a little closer before tying things up with a goal from Martel, with a helper going to Mathieu Lecours early in the third period. Shots kept coming from both teams in the third period as they tried to break the tie, but it was one from Flin FlonÕs Cole Wilson that sealed the deal. After accepting a pass from Cole Gibson and David Dykstra, Wilson put the puck away Ð giving the Bombers the one up they needed for the win. In total, the Bombers fired off 46 shots to the Bruins while Weninger faced 24. The Bombers and Bruins faced off again Saturday night when the Bombers took Estevan down in a shootout.
