A five-goal outpour in the third period, including two from the league's leading goal scorer Reid MacLeod, helped the Flin Flon Bombers cruise to a 6-2 road win over the Battleford North Stars last Friday. The goals were MacLeod's 10th and 11th of the season in only nine games. Through the first two periods, the story seemed to be the same as when the Stars visited the Whitney Forum earlier this season: goaltending in the form of Stars goalie Ryan Kerpin, who turned away 27 shots. The Stars took a 2-1 lead into the third, on goals by Rick Cey and Tony Oak, but Dennis Kubat would reply in the second on the power play from David Linsley. The Bombers goal scorers, and the power play, turned things around in the third. Flin Flon scored five times on 13 shots, four of them with the man advantage. Second-year forward Pierre-Luc Boucher continued his point streak by getting things rolling in the third on the PP, from Kubat. Boucher would end with one goal and two assists, good for the game's first star and the point scoring lead in the SJHL. Also scoring for the Bombers were rookie Cole Wilson and Shawn McNaulty. The Bombers had a few days off before heading to Melfort on Wednesday. They will then have their annual Parents Weekend tonight and Saturday when they entertain the Kindersley Klippers for two games at the Whitney Forum. Coach Mike Reagan said he was "happy with the explosion of scoring in the third period." Referring back to when the North Stars beat the Bombers at the Whitney Forum, Reagan said "it looked like the goalie was going to steal another win." The North Stars outplayed the Bombers in the first two periods, according to Reagan, but the guys "found a way to score in the third." With five of the six goals, for the Bombers, coming on power plays, Reagan said it's "a big thing for us." Working on both penalty kills and power plays has been a focus for the Bombers, and Reagan said winning the game was a big accomplishment. "When you win games, you want to get out and play as many as you can, so after winning four games (in a row), waiting four days until our next game is a long time for the guys,"he said. The Bombers chalked up another "W" on Wednesday, defeating the Melfort Mustangs 6-3. More on this victory Monday. Friday Game Notes Cole Wilson's goal was his first as a Bomber. That gave the first-year forward from Wilcox, SK one goal and four assists in nine games. The Bombers went 5-11 on the power play while the North Stars went 1-9. Heading into Wednesday's games, the Bombers boasted the top two point scorers and the top goal scorer in the league. Boucher and MacLeod were first and second in league scoring and MacLeod led all scorers with 11 goals. Flin Flon called up 16-year-old forward Matt White. The Moose Jaw native currently plays for the AAA Midget Battlefords North Stars, where he had one goal and one assists in four games. - Kelly Carrington, with notes from an SJHL news release.
