Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Flin Flon Bombers came flying out of the gates in the first period last Sunday against La Ronge, but it wasn't enough to earn them the win. The Bombers tied the game 1-1 early against the visiting Ice Wolves. They earned a second goal in the matinee game as Dylan MacNab scored his first of the season. An easy open-net goal left the Ice Wolves trailing by one, but not for long as they found a way past PJ Musico. With the score tied at 2-2, the Ice Wolves earned one more before the end of the first period. Though the Bombers hacked away, they couldn't get the puck past Ice Wolves netminder Adam Bartko. The second period was scoreless for both teams, though it wasn't from a lack of trying. Throughout the second period, both the Bombers and Ice Wolves were in the penalty box four times Ð though according to the 500 people in the stands, there should have been more calls. Tough breaks The Bombers tried to work through the tough breaks but had trouble keeping their momentum going. The Ice Wolves took advantage of that and scored an early goal in the third period, making it 4-2. Down by two, the Bombers put a strong effort forward as David Roper put one past Bartko. Flin Flon kept the effort going in the third period but were unable to earn the fourth goal to tie things up. The Bombers may have started 2011 off with a loss, but they hope to redeem themselves tonight with the Humboldt Broncos in town. Heading into the Christmas break, the Bombers had some difficulty on the road as they had a postponed game against the Ice Wolves followed by two losses Ð one to the Battlefords North Stars and one to the Kindersley Klippers. Immediately after the break, the Bombers hosted the Sweden 17 and Under International hockey team. With only one practice under their belts after being off the ice for a little over a week, the Bombers played well but lost 5-4 to the Swedish team. Following tonight's game against the Broncos, the Bombers will prepare to host the Nipawin Hawks on Friday night.
