Heading into Melville Stadium Wednesday, the Flin Flon Bombers were feeling confident from their road win the night before in Yorkton. But they knew coming into Melville it was going to be a tough night, as the Millionaires sit in first place in the Sherwood Conference. The game had the Bombers down 3-0 in the second period before a deflection goal from Devin Mitzner put the Maroon and White on the scoreboard. And the team didn't stop there. They gained two more goals quickly to tie things up in a game that was thought to be over by those in the stands. "It kick-started the guys and (we) were able to feed off that," says head coach and GM Mike Reagan. But after taking the lead for a short while, the Bombers ultimately lost 6-4 to the home team. The Bombers left the rink still feeling pretty good about their game. "There were a couple of mistakes that cost us," says Reagan, "but that's the way the game goes. "The team that does a better job (of recovering) usually wins the game." Though the Bombers didn't earn the two points they were looking for, the coach says a good effort was put out by the boys. The following is a summary of the game: Melville took the lead early on with a goal against Matt Weninger to break his goose egg. As the period went on, the Bombers had a few attempts on net, but were unable to get past Riley Hengen. Hitting the 13-minute mark, the Millionaires shoveled another one over Weninger, making it 2-0. By the end of the period, Weninger had stopped 20 of the 22 shots that came his way. The Bombers handed off nine shots to their opponents. The second period began much like the first with a goal from the Millionaires fairly early on. But it was Mitzner who was able to break the shutout with a deflection goal, giving helpers to Brennan Cox and Tommy Castonguay. Three minutes later, Cole Wilson was on the gambit after accepting a pass from Reid MacLeod. With the score at 3-2 for the Mills, an unassisted goal from Michael Young tied things up at three. Through the second period, the Bombers offered another 12 shots while Weninger was busy with 18 shots coming his way. The third period had the Bombers turning things around as they not only scored the first goal of the period, but broke away and took the lead with a powerplay goal from Jean Sebastian Bergeron. After accepting a pass from Mitzner and Castonguay, Bergeron found the back of the net. The Mills bench boss had enough and pulled Hengen and replaced him with Travis Bosch Ð giving the net the protection it needed. The Bombers were unable to get past the Millionaires again that night Ð though the home team continued with a few goals. Three more goals would do it for Melville as they walked away with two points and a 6-4 win. For the Bombers, Reagan said they came "up on the short end of the stick" from Wednesday's game, but are ready for a break of a few days before hosting the La Ronge Ice Wolves in a double-header weekend on January 16 and 17.
