Mackenzie Groenewegen likes to entertain his mind with fantasy books. He has already read the entire Harry Potter series and read the Lord of the Rings when he was little. Right now he's reading the sixth book in The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. There are 11 in total. "He creates a whole world," Groenewegen says. The 6-4 forward likes the adventure fantasy books can take him on because "anything seems possible." He likes stories that push the imagination. When it comes to reading books, Groenewegen feels that it's better than watching a movie. "It's up to you to interpret things," he explains. "You can decide how things look. When I read about characters, personalities come to mind. I really like that." His favourite book is Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. "That book is just really good and intelligently written," says Groenewegen, sitting on the couch in the Bombers' empty dressing room. Groenewegen, who is from Meadow Lake, SK, became a bookworm because of his 21-year-old sister, Ashley. He's likely thankful for that, as it keeps him busy on the bus. Among the books he has read are Moby Dick, Swiss Family Robinson, and The Da Vinci Code. "It's ridiculously sacrilegious," he says, of The Da Vinci Code. "It was really well-written. It came together in the end." He didn't agree with a lot of what was in it, feeling it was a smear campaign on the Catholic church. Most people who enjoy reading tend to go through books quickly Ð and Groenewegen is one of those. "It took me three days to read The Da Vinci Code," he says. "Ender's game is 350 pages with small print. I got through that in one day." The two-way forward likes to read books half for knowledge and half for entertainment and this season he has read two Harry Potter books, The Da Vinci Code and the aforementioned book six in The Wheel of Time series.
