Well, this one didn't go too great. The Flin Flon Bombers got beat soundly by the Melfort Mustangs Wednesday night, losing 7-3 on the road.
Melfort got on the board early courtesy of a goal from Ty Albrecht. Jaxon Martens, the Bombers' leading scorer so far this season, tied the game up midway through the frame, but Seth McCulloch snagged the lead back for the Mustangs late in the period.
From there, it was all Melfort, all the time, getting goals from Curtis Hammond and Ben Tkachuk in the second. Xavier Lapointe scored for the Bombers in the mid-second period, but that wasn't enough to stop the bleeding. Tye Evans scored late in the third, and while Matt Egan got on the board with his first-ever SJHL goal with a minute left, the Mustangs got two more late goals from Tye Scherger and Boston Maxwell, both on late powerplays.
The Bombers' discipline fell apart in this game, particularly in the third period, where two players received misconduct penalties. Brett Wieschorster was given two and a game for a check from behind on Melfort's Carter Anderson, while Xavier Lapointe got the boot for roughing up Tkachuk with less than two minutes to go.
Five of Melfort's goals, including both of the goals in the final minutes, came while the Bombers were shorthanded.
Max Hildebrand stayed in net all night, taking a 31-save L for the Bombers. Joel Favreau, Melfort's 'tender, made 25 saves to earn his second win against the Bombers this season.
The Bombers won't have to wait long for a shot at redemption, next week and at the Whitney Forum. The Bombers will host the Mustangs Nov. 12 to start a five-game homestand that will last until late November.
