Bomber Game Report

Lady Luck wasn't smiling on the Bombers Wednesday night. The team went from a 3-1 third period lead over Notre Dame to a 4-3 OT loss.

The scoring got going in the second, with Johno Hoins getting the Hounds on the board first. Drew Kuzma answered back for the Bombers less than a minute later to tie the game once more, with the Bombers getting a late go-ahead goal from Jaeden Mercier on a powerplay.  The Bombers outshot the Hounds 33-14 though 40 minutes, but Notre Dame goalie Austin Elliott stood mostly tall.

Flin Flon would extend the lead again with a second powerplay goal from Brett Wieschorster, making it 3-1 Bombers early in the third. The goal came with the Hounds down a man due to a headshot on Bomber defender Rylan Thiessen by Dane Probe, who was assessed a five-and-a-game.

It wouldn't last. Nolen Coventry got the Hounds within one midway through the frame, then not long after a slash from Bomber netminder Ben Montgomery put the Hounds on a powerplay, Nik Sombrowski tied the game.

Both teams would head to 3-on-3 overtime, with both sides trading momentum but the Hounds getting the upper hand, putting up five shots to the Bombers' one. After just over three minutes of action, Notre Dame's Elliot Dutil stuffed the puck home behind Montgomery, ending the game and handing the Bombers one point, but not two.

Montgomery took the L with a 32 save performance. Elliott, fresh off a run with the WHL's Saskatoon Blades, made 45 stops in a sterling performance.

The Bombers got one point in the performance, staying in top spot in the Sherwood division and third in the league with 59 points, now three points up on the idle Melfort Mustangs. The Bombers now have three out of four possible points at the halfway point of a four-game-in-five-night southern road swing.

That road trip continues Friday with a heavyweight tilt against the best team in the SJHL, the Estevan Bruins. In three games so far this season, the Bombers have gone 1-2 against Estevan. The game Friday will be the teams' last matchup this regular season. Following that, the Bombers will wrap up their roadie with a Saturday night special in Weyburn.
