Bomber Game Report

That's more like it. The Bombers got back in the W column with a Saturday night victory over Weyburn.

Flin Flon grabbed a 6-4 win against the SJHL's resident cellar-dweller, one night after those same opponents - with 16 skaters and two rookie goalies, no less - defeated the Bombers in a 5-3 schmoz.

Both teams' offences got going early. Weyburn cracked the scoreboard four minutes in with a goal by Braden Birnie, but Jaxon Martens tied the game up shortly after. Ethan Whillans scored once more for the visitors, giving Weyburn a 2-1 lead, but Jacob Vockler came right back shortly after to bring the game back to 2 all.

Jeremi Tremblay scored just over a minute after to give the Bombers their first lead of the weekend, but that was tempered by another Weyburn goal, this time by Austyn Hansen, tying the game up again late in the first.

After the first 20 minutes though, Weyburn's offence dried up and the Bombers got back to work. Matt Raymond banged one away past Weyburn goalie Zane Winter to give the Bombers the lead, then Kylynn Olafson picked a corner on Winter to extend the lead to 5-3.

Another goal came from Xavier Lapointe halfway through the third, allowing the Bombers to double up the lead to 6-3. Beau Larson brought the Wings back within two late in the third, but that was as close as the game would get.

Cal Schell made 23 saves in the win, while Winter stopped 45 pucks on the evening.

Flin Flon moves into sole possession of third place in the league with 41 points, climbing ahead of the Battlefords North Stars, which lost to Nipawin Saturday night. Humboldt and Estevan remain in the league's top two - as of Saturday night, both teams had 46 points, though Humboldt beat the Bruins 4-1.

The Bombers play two more games before the holiday break, both next weekend and both against the La Ronge Ice Wolves. The two sides will face off in La Ronge Dec. 17 before coming back to Flin Flon to wrap up the first chunk of the season at th Whitney Forum Dec. 18. The teams will face each other again after the holiday break Dec. 31 at the Forum.
