Mike Kardash, a key member of the Flin Flon Bombers team that shocked the hockey world by winning the 1957 Memorial Cup, has died. He was 69. Kardash passed away July 3 after a brief battle with cancer, his obituary stated. Born in Prince Albert in 1938, Kardash left home at age 15 to pursue a career in the game he loved. After helping the Bombers capture the national championship, the left-shooting blueliner joined the Clinton Comets of the EHL for two seasons. He spent 1960-61 with the WHL's Winnipeg Warriors before splitting the following season with that league's Vancouver Canucks and the IHL's Fort Wayne Komets. Kardash's pro career ended in 1966-67 following five more seasons in the EHL, including the final three with the Greensboro Generals. Kardash was in Flin Flon this past January, joining several other '57 Bombers to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the momentous victory. He and his old teammates unveiled a street sign christening the Whitney Forum as "57 Memorial Cup Drive" in honour of the achievement. Kardash leaves to mourn wife Joan, daughters Tonya and Nikki and son David, five grandchildren and many other family members and friends. A memorial service was held in Prince Albert on July 5.
