Not long ago, Connor Ingram was trying to get ice time with the Flin Flon Bombers. Now he has a chance to play for Canada on a global stage.
Ingram was named Nov. 29 to the selection camp roster for this year’s World Junior Hockey Championships.
Ingram, a 19-year-old goalie from Imperial, Sask., was one of three goalies named to the roster and has a good chance of playing in this year’s tournament.
The team includes several top NHL prospects and draft picks, including Arizona Coyotes forward Dylan Strome, New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal and Columbus Blue Jackets top prospect Pierre-Luc Dubois.
In 2014, Ingram was planning to accept a scholarship offer from a major American university and play junior A hockey with the Bombers. He played in two games for Flin Flon in 2013-14.
Shortly before the 2014-15 season started, Ingram changed his mind and signed with the Western Hockey League’s Kamloops Blazers. Since then, he has become one of Canada’s top young goalies.
Ingram was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in last summer’s NHL Entry Draft, going 88th overall.
The Team Canada selection camp will be held in Boisbriand, QC from Dec. 10-14.
This year’s World Juniors will be held in Montreal and Toronto from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5. Canada plays its first game of the tournament on Boxing Day at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre against Russia.
