Attention all four and five-year-olds. Your days of sitting on the couch this spring are done. Flin Flon/Creighton Minor Ball is introducing Blast Ball, which is similar to t-ball, but a little different. With no pitcher, kids will hit a ball and run to one base that makes a noise and back to home plate. It's as simple as that. "I think it's coordinated to keep your mind on something other than 20 seconds," said Lynn Burroughs, president of Flin Flon/Creighton Minor Ball. There are 30 kids already registered for Blast Ball with registrations taking place this weekend. (Check the Recreation Corner for more details.) Allison Mote, is a parent whose son Riley will play and she sees it as an opportunity for him. "There's nothing for that age group," she said. "It's nothing really complicated. They just hit the ball." Burroughs said Blast Ball will keep all the kids involved and will also give the players a chance to learn skills. "I think they'll really enjoy it," she said. "It will be like a hockey school." Burroughs also feels Blast Ball will bring back family fun. "We need to have it a family thing and have fun with the kids," she explained, as older kids are going to games by themselves. "It's just left to the kids." If the weather doesn't cooperate, the playing field will shift to the Sportex, which the league has rented. Flin Flon will also be hosting provincial tournaments for Mites, Squirts, and Pee Wee the weekend of July 8-9.
