Two goals by Andrew Skrabek lifted the Flin Flon Bombers over the Melfort Mustangs by a score of 4-3 on Wednesday night. The loss was Melfort's 13th game in a row without a win, dating back to December, 2003. The Mustangs came out of the gate flying, and scored just 25 seconds after the opening face off on a goal by Jeff Hajner. Julian's second goal of the season at 13:44 tied the game for Flin Flon, assisted by Jimo King and Kyle Holmes. The Bombers scored two more goals early in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Clayton Geiger's fifth of the season at 3:54 was assisted by Bob Graham and Kyle Holmes, and Andrew Skrabek's goal at 5:14 was assisted by Stewart Sjoberg and Joe Gori. Call up Brennan Ewen scored his first goal of the season at 5:34 to cut Flin Flon's lead in half, and the period ended with the Bombers leading 3-2. Skrabek's second of the game and 22nd of the season at 9:45 gave the Bombers a 4-2 lead, and would eventually prove to be the game winner, as Rylan Gebhart scored the final goal of the game on a power play at 14:32, with John Iron and Jeff LaPointe both in the penalty box. The Mustangs have the league's worst power play, and showed why on Wednesday, scoring only one goal on 11 chances. Flin Flon was held scoreless on eight tries with the man advantage. Francois Laverdiere made 20 saves for the win, and Brenden Cuthbert stopped 22 shots in net for the losing team. With the win, the Bombers moved ahead of the La Ronge Ice Wolves for fifth place in the Dodge Conference, and gained some valuable ground on the Nipawin Hawks, as both teams were losers on Wednesday night. The Bombers are now 11 points out of a playoff spot, behind Nipawin in the Dodge Conference and Estevan in the Sherwood Conference for the crossover spot. The Bombers continued their four-game road trip with a game against the Notre Dame Hounds on Thursday night. Results were unavailable at press time. Flin Flon will have a day off on Friday, with a game in Weyburn on Saturday. They will close the trip in Estevan on Sunday.
