Bicycle Safety Week is proclaimed in Saskatchewan by the Minister of Crown Corporations to draw attention to bicycle safety. Every year, on average, in Saskatchewan bicycle collisions kill two and injure 194 cyclists. There are several potential hazards present for cyclists that may lead to injury. Cyclists need to be able to juggle multiple factors such as balancing the bike, watching for approaching cars, and paying attention to road signs. Here are some tips to Be Bike Smart A bicycle is a vehicle, not a toy. Always wear a proper fitting helmet and bright clothing when riding your bike. If there is a problem with your bike, get it fixed! Once a week, check your tire pressure, wheels, spokes, brakes, seat, handlebars, and chain. Always obey all traffic lights and signs. Use shoulder checks and hand signals to let other drivers know what you intend to do. Always ride with the right hand side with traffic. Never ride against traffic. Ride one meter away from parked cars and watch for opening car doors. RememberÉ.. "Accidents" are no accident. Injuries are preventable! The best way to avoid getting hurt is to practice safe bicycling. Following these tips will lead to safer and more enjoyable biking.
