Compiled by Kelly Carrington The Bauer Conference came out on top in the SJHL All-Star game last Thursday, besting the Sherwood Conference in a convincing 12-8 win. Playing in Lanigan, SK, for part of Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, the best of the best were on the ice to prove their skills. The Bauer Conference Ð coached by the Flin Flon Bombers coaching staff of Mike Reagan, Trevor Sack and Jeff Woods Ð did not regret playing Andrew Bodnarchuk between the pipes. He was able to make some big saves for the team as well as stick out in the skills competition and the four-on-four play. Bodnarchuk earned the team's MVP honours while the Sherwood Conference award went to Johnny Calkins. The following players earned markers in the SJHL All-Star Festival: Todd Chinova (Melfort) and Mitch Wall (Battlefords) had two goals apiece for the Bauer in the second and third period scrimmage. Other goal scorers were Matthew Spafford (Nipawin), Aaron DeCorby (La Ronge), Dustin Stevenson (La Ronge), Andrew Johnston (Flin Flon), Brody Haygarth (Flin Flon), Harrison Tribble (Melfort), and Mike Young (Flin Flon). Andrew Perrault (Weyburn), Calkins (Kindersley), Jordan Braid (Kindersley), and Chad Filteau (Estevan, now Battlefords) scored for the Sherwood. Bombers goalie Matt Weninger played the first half of each period, helping to earn the team's win. Sherwood took the skills portion of the game 4-1 as they were winners in the puck control relay, both of the fastest skater relays, as well as the powerplay three-on-one drill. Bauer won the breakaway relay. The SJHL All-Star Festival was held, in conjunction, with the Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, which had special events planned all weekend. SJHL all-stars mingled with the minor hockey community on Thursday afternoon before settling in for pictures, warm-up, and the game Thursday evening.
