Basics will be the focus at Flin Flon Xtreme Hockey School

A summer tradition for young hockey players will soon resume.

The 17th annual Flin Flon Xtreme Hockey School will run from Aug. 22 to 26 at the Whitney Forum. The camp focuses on teaching young players basic skills such as shooting, stickhandling and skating.

“Typically throughout a hockey season, you don’t get a lot of time to work on your individual skills,” said camp director Mike Reagan. “That’s what the hockey school allows you to do.”

The camp is often held shortly before the Flin Flon Bombers begin training camp. Many past and present Bombers will arrive in Flin Flon to assist Reagan, who is also the Bombers’ head coach and general manager.

“Usually, every year we have our Bombers, different guys from the team, come out and work with the kids,” said Reagan. “It’s a great opportunity for the kids to get to know a lot of our players.”

The camp splits players into three age groups. If demand warrants, this will include a 13-to-15-year-old age group, which was previously cut from the camp.

“The numbers just didn’t allow us to have that group any longer, but there seems to be a demand for it right now,” said Reagan. “If we can get enough kids, we’re going to offer that age group again.”
